Activity: 0% Longevity: 81% | | Can someone explain why a purse is worth $3,000 or more?
Being a guy, maybe I just don't get it. I have asked a few women about this and they told me they don't get it either. But maybe I am asking the wrong people, so I thought I'd post this here.
What is it exactly that makes a purse worth $3,000 or even more?
Are the secrets of the universe locked inside? Are they really THAT good looking? I ask that second question because some of the most expensive purses seem ugly to me. Louis Vuitton, for example. I have also seen some expensive purses that DO look really nice, but $3,000+ ???
Do they relieve stress? Can they help take care of the kids? Does food magically appear when you open them? Or, maybe money magically appears? Do they attract men?
One of the women I asked told me that some purses can go for more than $25,000.
I just don't get it...

Maybe the same reason why some guys spend $150+ for a pair of sneakers that cost $5 to make and some really do look dumb and butt ugly!.
I really do believe that some people must have the latest and greatest at all cost. I remember working for a company that handled some Prada products and saw a Purse that looked like it was made out of bubble wrap.....cost: $3,000! and I thought, I could make a purse like that but the name is what sells.
Probably why a lot of people go for the foo-foo's so much.

It's a status symbol, me driving a nice car shows i have money for example. A rolex cost thousands but does the same thing a $5 dollar watch does. It also attracts attention and when your around other people who have money you want to show them you can afford an expensive handbag, its basically a subtle way of bragging aswell.

3,000 is actually cheap for a certain purse.
There is certain brand I like myself that sells well into the 100s but not 3000.00.
Jewelry, purses and shoes come at the top of the list for most women.
If they have to money they will buy the best or most expensive.
There is a shopping mall here in Florida where a normal purse usually wont be seen hanging from a womens arm or shoulder. The stores have security guards at the entry way. Then again the Rolex store has two guards and the Mac store has two roaming the floor.
Ivanka Trump sold million of dollars in shoes and her shoes frankly are not comfortable at all and sell well into the 100s in most cases.
The women who get caught up in the hype are similar to those guys who pay 1000s for a ticket to see a Super Bowl game, NBA game, college final four game etc.
Only thing is once the game is over all you have is a memory.
LOL- I sold a metal 1940's purse for 800.00 once on ebay. Silk interior and in mint condition I think I ended up with 60+ bids on it. Shocked that it went to those numbers in the bidding war. So yes, you have the status issue and also women who have to have purses that collect them like baseball cards.

Look up Hermes bags.
When I was an affiliate for ebay (don't even know if that still exists) I was lucky to get a whale as one of my referrers. She/he purchased $150k worth of purses over the span of 2 weeks.
I forget what the split was back then, but I pocketed about $4k on that one. I don't know if the Cookie expired or Ebay erased it because I was making too much, but imagine having your affiliate link for that guy, for life. He'd be making my Merecedes payments lol

oh jeff', oh jeff', oh jeff',
Do you not give the best to your CATS?
A purse is that type of item to some females. The best so they pay the price.
Are they deluded? Not sure.
Let me tell you there is something enthralling about the workmanship in a haute couture purse.
Some people simply like the finer things of life, and not 10 cent foo-foos from dhgate.

Why is anything worth anything? Because demand is high and enough people are willing to pay the high price.
This goes for any object being sold from one person to another. Does not matter what it is. If you and I both agree that it is worth a set amount, then so it shall be.
We all have something in our lives that we would pay a higher price for than another person who does not share the same interests and/or desires as you. Car, house, clothes, electronics, pets and any other object that exists and is traded.

Exclusivity, Status, Elitism a LOT of companies try to achieve this on one level or another, as for handbags, as was mentioned, Hermes, as well as Handbags from Victoria Beckham, Anya Hindmarch, Marc Jacobs, Stella McCartney and others can commonly fetch UPWARDS of $50,000, NOT because of what they are made of, But who designed it, how many exist, and MOST IMPORTANTLY,,the message that it sends the world about the person who owns it. You see it ALL the time, at ALL different Price levels, in all types of products,,Hell,,Apple Does the SAME EXACT thing,,the Overcharge People by making them believe their products somehow elevate their Stature in society,,,But that's America,,,

Hey if someone is smart enough of a marketer to create brands like Gucci, LV, etc... Than good for them, it's not that the purse itself as material is worth anything but they are paying for the name

For the same reason you have your Cats, Jeff, it makes them happy. Lots of people would not understand your obsession with Cats but it is your thing.
Also $3,000 is kinda mid-range for a designer purse. I had a GF who owned several 20K+ purses.
It also is not just a woman's thing. Purses are but what your are really talking about is high-fashion. Men can appreciate it as well. I personally appreciate the finer things in life. I'm sure I have watches that you would frown upon.

Just to clear this up:
I have no problem with anyone owning anything they like. I am not anti-purse. Or anti-watch. Or anti-shoes. I would argue that I am not obsessed with cats, but I'd probably be shouted down here since I've posted so many cute cat pictures.
I guess I have my answer. It means different things to different people, but is primarily a status symbol. My Mom had a bunch of purses, and even owned a $300 Gucci purse, which I thought was extremely expensive (this was in the late 1970's or early 80's). When I asked her why she bought such an expensive purse, she told me because she wanted it - probably her way of telling me not to question her.
I've just never been one to go for designer stuff.

. | Different strokes for different folks.
Your Mom summed it nicely.
To want it and to be able to afford it is the bottom line.
For those that may buy with a credit card then that is not so sensible.(Unless they pay the balance on their next statment).
Besides the tissue paper they come wrapped in is gorgeous. |

No female would consider damaging the stitching on their bag just for the pleasure of hitting some twerp over his head. |

on a slightly different note, I kinda laugh when I'm at the airport and see people with highend luggage like Louis Vuitton.
To me, nothing says "steal my contents it's probably expensive stuff" more than luxury luggage. Way to blend in and lay low.
