Re: NFL/NCAA Football Talk - 2014-15 Season

I am not sure we really have the patience for NFL in the UK (and the rest of the EU!)

We just dont have the same sort of advert culture in sports as the US has.

Rugby and football games are

40/45 mins uninterrupted play
3 mins of adverts (No commercial adverts on the BBC)
10 mins of half time analysis
3 mins of adverts again
40/45 mins of uninterrupted 2nd half play
10 mins full time analysis

Finished

It would take a lot of adjusting to get people to put up with so many breaks

It does seem like the NFL is pushing hard for a London based franchise though, so maybe that will change things.

On a side note..

Average premiership football player earns around £2.4 million ($3.4m) a year
Average premiership rugby player earns around £90,000 ($130,000) a year

So you may get a lot of rugby players wanting to play American football

NFL has plans to be rooted in Europe in 6 years.

6 years seems ambitious

It takes a long time for a club to build its supporter base.

One off games in London may be sell outs, but week after week the novelty may ware off

At the moment we are a nation of UK football, cricket and rugby. It would be very hard got NFL to break into that

In Germany it seems to be played a lot more though through school grades

Rugby league. Different code

Rugby Union is the big one

League is a lot more like NFL in ways. They don't have line outs or scrums. Its a much more basic game to understand

I played rugby in high school and some college - fun and a lot more physical at times.

Sometimes silly antics would go on during the scrums...

Looks Like bad weather for the Carolina/Arizona NFC Championship game, might be a good under play. Additionally, AZ is flying east on Saturday, just a day before the game. its a lot rougher to adjust flying east through 3 time zones then flying west.

Under play you say hmm

elusive1 01-22-2016 11:32 PM

Re: NFL/NCAA Football Talk - 2014-15 Season

Of course under is always the correct side (all things being equal) as the public always bets over, so Costa Rica compensates for that when they make the line.

Cincinnati practically gave that game away fans and players after the game were crying lol I felt bad because the Chiefs had to then travel to New England to play a team that is 14-3 at Gillette stadium in the playoffs under Tom Brady now 15-3.

It reminded me of the same thing along with Billy Cundiff's missed field goal in 2012 that cost Baltimore a Super Bowl. When I saw Walsh miss that kick I couldn't believe he missed it being so close.

That GB and Arizona game was one for the ages it was amazing how GB scored with 2 Hail Mary's with so little time left and then Arizona in overtime return the favor.

If Knives Davis wouldn't have fumbled the ball the game would have went into overtime. I sure wish Jamaal Charles would have been able to play it would have been a totally different story. That's 3 straight playoff games he has been out and what horrible clock management near the end of the game.

Their was NFL Europe for awhile in the past but it didn't have a large enough market and fan base to stay apparently.

London may work for the NFL because it is such a large market and not to far for East Coast NFL teams. With regards to Germany I know it was the best for NFL Europe when it existed but the travel is too far.

I agree with regards to Soccer, Commie Kick Ball or Futball whatever you wish to call it. Will never work in the US. Baseball has commercials more than any sport. NBA Basketball has TV timeouts to run commercials. NFL Football is built in a similar way. Soccer or European Football Zero Commercials. By our standards that is unAmerican.

One major problem with soccer is the aspect of games ending in a tie hah....quite un-"American" :FF:

Yea it happens like once every 4 years in the NFL. Thankfully the NHL finally did away with it some years ago. Also the fact that soccer has "Friendlies" instead of exhibition or preseason games just doesn't sit well most Americans. More than anything its the Commercials though.

5 days of playing and ends in a nice draw
