Dymo label printer Thinking of getting one of these, anyone has one?
Also is it true the ink NEVER runs out? or does it need some other parts replaced or something? |
| GoteBay | 09-25-2014 03:02 PM | Re: Dymo label printer You missed one key word in the subject line; THERMAL - never uses ink.
I have one and it runs like a power horse. |
| Foreveryoung789 | 09-25-2014 03:06 PM | Re: Dymo label printer I don't have it.
As I understand it, you don't need ink or toner, just some DYMO label rolls. |
| JamesNorth101 | 09-25-2014 03:08 PM | Re: Dymo label printer It does not use ink so no ink to run out of.
Parts can stop working, like anything else, but generally they are great little machines that keep going. |
Re: Dymo label printer Thanks for the responses...
I understand its thermal and no ink required.
1. whats the difference between thermal and ink, I mean how on earth can you print using thermal, thermal what? there must be some black residue or something being applied?
2. why dont they turn office/home inkjet printers into thermal? no more running out cartridges right?
3. how will it recognise if you dont but the original dymo brand labels inside? isnt it like saying putting a non-branded A4 paper into your printer? |
| CCJay | 09-25-2014 04:32 PM | Re: Dymo label printer I have one and it's great. Thermal uses heat. Exactly like till receipts etc.
Copy labels are fine
Cost main factor is large thermal printers
Would love to set mine up on a network and print from Android app etc but don't think you can
I have the 450 |
Re: Dymo label printer I have heard zebra brand allows any label but dymo recognises its not the right brand and refuses to print.
I like things to look aesthetically pleasing, zebra looks ancient hence why im inclined to invest in a dymo.
Do they develop faults regularly? or are they quite stable?
I have a HP printer, no problems what so ever...so I hope these are similar...
This video helped my understanding of thermal printing, if anyone is interested, check it out: |

I have the 450 | What these used for just to print like return addresses on or something. |
| JamesNorth101 | 09-25-2014 04:44 PM | Re: Dymo label printer 1 - Just think of it as burning the paper in a controlled way
2 - Most people who use a printer want a range of colours. Cannot have a colour thermal printer, most you can have is a two tone thermal printer. Personally I would love a thermal printer to replace my black and white laser printer. |

You just need a label printer + labels = Done. No Ink etc. |

But I hope as technology advances, we find an alternative to INK. It is ridiculous how expensive official HP cartridges are, especially laser cartridges.
I get the feeling paper/ink will disappear from our lives before an alternative to ink is found...(#technologytakesovertheworld) |
| xShevaa7x | 09-25-2014 05:15 PM | Re: Dymo label printer I think I will buy one of these. I have been considering label printing for a while now, but didn't want to spend too much, but for 50 it's nothing. |
Re: Dymo label printer If you print a lot of labels it is a cost effective solution, less time consuming as well. Which are you going to buy the zebra one or dymo? |
| xShevaa7x | 09-25-2014 05:27 PM | Re: Dymo label printer Just bought the Dymo. It's due to come on Monday. It's cheaper to write it myself no matter how many items i'm selling. Currently averaging around 100 a week now. Pens cost nothing, like 10p at most but I think a label printer looks nicer and is easier to just copy and paste an address and printing it.
I didn't look into it so much in the past because I really hate printers, they always mess up on me. The need for ink is really annoying too, but discovering that these don't use ink I think it's much better (and cheaper).
The fact the printer is around 52-56 on eBay and that you get 100s of free labels of different sizes to try out means it's a good deal in my opinion.
I can't justify 100s on a printer, but 50 quid is acceptable.
Edit: I'm also hoping it means royal mail will lose less packages. My hand writing is very neat and the guy at the post office never has an issue when doing recorded deliveries, but i'm hoping that this gives them less of an excuse losing my normal large letter packages. |
| yankee | 09-25-2014 05:29 PM | Re: Dymo label printer I always use zebra printers. Must have printed a half million labels or more on them. Very little failure. Every once in a while you have to change a roller......far and away more reliable than a standard printer. A label printer would last most people a lifetime. |

The amount of issues I had with printers during my school/college/university days. Pain in the arse most of them. They're hard to troubleshoot and not much can be done, unlike computers.
I will post about the printer on Monday when it arrives. |

| xShevaa7x | 09-25-2014 07:20 PM | Re: Dymo label printer I watched a few videos and saw how simple, fast and efficient it is (after seeing this topic) and bought one. |
| DYMOsupport | 09-26-2014 03:40 AM | Re: Dymo label printer @Play Thank you for the interest. As some members here have mentioned, the key to thermal printing is that the labels have a special coating that reacts to heat thus allowing to print without ink. This is also the reason why over a long time the labels begin to fade.
@xShevaa7x Thank you for your trust. We are always there for you in case you need any assistance with the printer.
Our local numbers are listed on the official web site so everyone is welcome to give us a ring in case further questions regarding our machines come up.

My luck huh.
Also writing out each label is very time consuming, especially if your sitting and doing a large quantity.
A good feature, not sure if dymo support, just copy and paste a bunch of addresses and it prints the entire thing out rather than doing it individually as some videos on youtube show. |

Looks like the seller hasn't dispatched it even though it said it would be today via 24 hour courier, so I was expecting it on Monday at the latest, but now that might not happen. |

I should investigate further. I know some people print blind with use of a VA. I can only assume they are also printing an invoice for each label and that may solve the issues I have had batch printing in the past. |

| xShevaa7x | 09-29-2014 04:17 PM | Re: Dymo label printer It came today and I would recommend it.
I haven't done the "smart paste" function, and just copy and paste the address as I go along. I sell so many different products it's too confusing to print them all out at once and better to do them 1 at a time as I go through my orders. If you're selling multiples of the same product I can see where that would be very useful and fast.
I have had 0 issues with it spitting out extra labels or taking it's sweet ass time doing something. I have left it for hours, then pressed print and it's printed instantly. It really does print as fast as the video.
Price £52-55 on eBay 10/10 - Very cheap, but looks and feels sturdy and I have had no issues. I will update this post if I do run into some problems.
What you get 10/10 - You get 3 different size labels (quiet a few of each too), a USB lead and two power cables UK and EU I think it was, will check tomorrow. These are both individual plugs and not adapters. The package includes the installation disc and a start up guide, but didn't open it, so can't comment on how clear it is.
Ease of setup 7/10 - I plugged it in via the supplied USB and it installed the drivers. The software has to be downloaded or installed from the disc. Here is the only issue with the printer. If you Google for the software it takes a while to find it, and when I found a link on their site I clicked it and found it no longer exists. That's pretty shoddy to be honest. I decided to use the disc that came with it and installed the software expecting it to be an older version, and surprise it was, but it pops up with a message and takes you to the correct download page for the new software. The hosting they're using sucks really bad and I usually download files at 4.5MBs and from this site I was getting 200KBs by the end of it. That really made the 120MB file drag out. Loading the labels into the printer is very easy and it printed flawlessly at the first attempt.
Ease of use 8/10 - The only issue with getting free labels with the printer is it doesn't tell you what size they are. They just come in a black bag with nothing on it, so you have to guess which size option you need to choose in the software. The labels which come with it are pretty small and only 1/3 are big enough for shipping labels. The others are used for return addresses. The software is detailed and has many size options, once you know what labels you need and the size/font sizes you need you're good to go.

Re: Dymo label printer @xShevaa7x Thanks! Great detailed review.
A word of advice about smart paste/selling variation of products... If you see how the video has an excel spreadsheet, two colums, you could put address on one column and the product your selling on the other, so when the label prints you will know who its going to and what product its for. That way you will save time copy-paste each and every address. |
