No direct experience for me but, in cases like this one, I directly ask the question to the interested person or company (hotel in your case).
Write down a short email explaining what you are going to do and ask if it is possible.
If they write you back that you can do it, you have the confirmation and a mail to prove it.

Fairly certain they'll be asking for an ID from the person staying (anyone who stays at a hotel is asked for one) and they'll want the name of that person and his info (including address) to match the paypal account info.
Theres just too much chance of fraud otherwise and I don't see any hotel allowing the use of paypal otherwise - if they allow it to begin with.
Not worth the hassle if you ask me.

It is doable.
The main need is to supply ID for the booking(s).
I have booked airline tickets using paypal and enjoyed a discounted fare.
Same for accomodation. Supplying ID is the key as well as having a paypal account in good standing.  |

On all of the big sites there is usually a section for 'reservation name' - Just put your friends name in there, and make sure that he brings his ID. I've done this many times, never had a problem.

Hotel says I don't have to check in and I can pay for a friend's stay with my paypal account so no problems sounds good.

I have done it for a conference and worked great. I had to add the friend's name during the process of completing the transaction.

If they 'offer' the paypal service, they lay out what needs to be done.

Also from experience your friend will still need to leave a credit card or deposit on record when checking in. So make sure they're aware of that.
