Buying a Standing Work Desk (Automatic)

Hey guys, so I've been reading alot about all the health benefits of taking a break every so often for us frequent computers users and the benefits of standing while using the computer and I think I'm ready to buy one. Wanted to know if anyone on here is already using a standing desk or has any experience or advice on the subject?

I still plan on doing most of my work while sitting down but it would be cool to easily be able to press a button and raise the computer desk and just start working standing up for 20-30 minutes so I don't always have to be sitting down, which from what I read is not great for you for such long duration.

Right now I'm learning towards getting something like this:

UPLIFT 900 Sit-Stand Ergonomic Desks (Silver)

Why don't you just get a laptop and take your work with you wherever you go?

I like to work all over the house and in different environments.. heck I use my toolbox in my garage as a temp desk as I work on other things. Maybe time to upgrade?

That's a good point I could just upgrade my laptop with that money and use it anywhere, right now my desktop is far superior so I tend to use that more often

Thanks for the advice!

Yes but there are also some brilliant options out there for desks that allow users to stand up 123 and Aspkin! Laptops are great but it to easy to use them permanently sat down, which was the whole point of your post 123. You prompted me to have a look at them as well, there are some super ergonomic chairs out these days as well so when we do want to sit down we can do it in a way that's good for our joints and backs as well. I'm getting arthritis in my shoulder that I'm on painkillers for so I'm always interested in options like this.

I used to take my Labrador Retriever out for 3 hours every day, but then due to other issues that rather fell by the wayside. Now both of us have put to much weight on!, so finding ways to eat less, walk more, and find a user friendly way to work/sit more economically along the way is a constant. Both me and the fog have got a few years older during that process as well, entirely the wrong direction for this to be going, need to be doing something like those 3 hour walks alongside better use of work time when I get back home as well!!

Good idea for the standing desk. I am contemplating the same thing at the moment. The amount of workout or walking you do doesn't help if you still sit for 8 hours a day. I am thinking of getting one and then alternating 1 hour sitting and 1 hour standing.

I have logmein on my light laptop, use my bluetooth mouse to navigate/remote through my 7 lb laptop which is stationary in one room always. That way, it's like having a new laptop. You can work throughout the house that way or u can even go outside to a coffee shop or something and still do your stealth thru remote control.

Nice one glacier922, the lighter the laptop, the more manoeuvrable it and the user of it is, which is good all round of course. I use my iPad to access this forum, unfortunately mostly with the the arm/ shoulder I have the arthritis in, really need to change this setup.

Re: Buying a Standing Work Desk (Automatic)

+1 for laptops. I would be afraid to have my desk raise (while 6 monitors are attached to it) with the click of a button

Not like laptops have to be powerful in a technical aspect. I currently am using:

Toshiba Satellite C855:
*3rd gen i3
*15" screen
*Was using 4GB but decided to upgrade to 8GB (so I can have 3+ VM's run at once)
*Was 240GB SSD, but was close to full (with adobe, solidworks, MS office, 6-7 VM's, ISO's, etc) so upgraded to a 512GB SSD. But I did clear my HDD and I am only using 167GB atm.
*6 cell battery, soon to be 12.
*Broke the DVD drive (so it does not consume power = longer battery).

Cost was $100 for the laptop, and $80 for 240GB SSD. Other parts I feel is unnecessary with most users.

Rather then having an i7, an i3 (in most cases) will use less power and can truly get the job done in "on-the-go" environments. Like I said, I can use photoshop and solidworks 2013 without a problem, even with the VMs running. Use a desktop if you need power.. rather then wasting it on a laptop that will overheat. I was getting 4-5 hours of use, but the battery is about shot, so I am only getting 3 hours of use. When I pop in the 12 cell, I should get around 10 usable hours of life!

I have a cheap ultrabook, cost me £300 two years ago. Core i3, 4gb ram. It's perfect for me as it's so light and portableand I don't need much processing power. Also if I lost it on my travels I wouldn't care too much

@nivo, broke the DVD drive means you just removed (i.e. broke the power coupling) to avoid energy use when not being used?
