| a311hanna | 03-15-2016 07:55 AM | Ssd Hi all I have been reading a bit about ssd and not quit sure but would this speed up my VM at all? Sometimes I could fall asleep waiting on this damb thing.
I have an acer computer laptop.
Also how difficult is it to install as I am not tech savvy at alll. |
| empirestate | 03-15-2016 08:15 AM | Re: Ssd It's plug and play. Learn to install an OS and you are all set. |
| a311hanna | 03-15-2016 08:17 AM | Re: Ssd I have os on cd already. So I would be set to have ssd? |
| empirestate | 03-15-2016 08:18 AM | Re: Ssd You have not answered my question. Do you know how to install an OS? |
| a311hanna | 03-15-2016 08:23 AM | Re: Ssd I know how to install an os onto a cd yes. But to a ssd no maybe same concept I'm not sure?
So to use ssd you just plug it into laptop with a USB cord? |
| empirestate | 03-15-2016 08:41 AM | Re: Ssd An SSD is replacement to a mechanical hard drive. Remove the mechanical hard drive from your computer and just plug in the SSD. Boot up your OS and install. |
| a311hanna | 03-15-2016 08:52 AM | Re: Ssd Ok not sure about taking out hard drive though. Also what about the stuff on my hard drive? Would I save it to an SD card? Before removing it. Thanks for you r help as well |

| a311hanna | 03-15-2016 09:15 AM | Re: Ssd Ok thanks for trying. I'll stick with what I got for now then |
| a311hanna | 03-16-2016 09:37 AM | Re: Ssd Been eating lots of videos and I now have the knowledge ordered and it's on it way:-) can't wait to stay awake at the computer:-) |
Re: Ssd SSD Hard Drives are pretty awesome, I built my wife a Computer and installed a SSD and her PC boots uber fast, runs fast....can't go wrong with a SSD. |
| a311hanna | 03-16-2016 10:05 AM | Re: Ssd Thanks for the excitement can't wait to get it!
And experience it |
Re: Ssd What Windows Version are you running for your VMWares? |
| a311hanna | 03-16-2016 10:31 AM | Re: Ssd Windows 7 was all I could find for free. |
Re: Ssd Yeah agreed! Now that I have an SSD in my computer, would never go without one! |
| slokor | 03-16-2016 04:42 PM | Re: Ssd Easiest way to do things is to find installation and instruction videos on Youtube.
And SSD is definitely the way to go. I replace every single new laptop I get to have the fastest SSD I can find. |

SSD's are great and can potentially speed up your computer a ton, but I honestly don't think upgrading to an SSD would have much of an impact on the performance of your VMs. You would have to match your hard drive upgrade with a nice RAM upgrade to really be able to tell any difference. Reason being is each VM eats up a ton of RAM, because each VM uses the same amount of RAM as a regular computer.
So you can either spend hundreds of dollars upgrading your RAM and hard drive, or simply downgrade your virtual operating system.
Personally, I have 23 Windows XP VMs. Each one gets either 1gb or 512mb of RAM and 10gb HDD space. I run them seamlessly on a 6 year old laptop with 4g RAM, lol. |

I have a dinosaur all-in-one desktop with a mechanical drive... all it's used for is a kitchen computer playing YouTube. I almost threw it in the trash but it has a purpose again.. :)
SSD all the way. |

If you buy a Samsung SSD, it comes with the cloning software. If you buy any other brand, you will have to find your own aftermarket cloning software. |
| a311hanna | 03-17-2016 07:03 AM | Re: Ssd Thanks TGMT 2 I did get the samsung:-) |
| empirestate | 03-17-2016 07:36 AM | Re: Ssd Cloning is an option if that is your thing... but fresh installing is the best for getting the most optimal performance for your computer. |

The machine around it wont change, cloning will work just fine. |

| a311hanna | 03-17-2016 01:36 PM | Re: Ssd Cool:-) I am trying get to figure out how to get wine off all these and xp on them thought I had it but not yet. If I delete my VMs then when I recreate them with xp that would make it like starting all over so ebay pp would be watching so trying to do it still with out starting all over. |

I don't know if I'll be able to explain in a way you will understand, but it is possible to migrate all of your Windows 7 stuff to XP.
You would have to set your Windows XP .ISO to boot when the VM starts up. This is done by going into the VM's settings, CD-DVD (IDE), and selecting "Use ISO image file". You select your XP installation ISO and the VM will load XP setup on next startup. Then, you SHOULD have the option to downgrade your OS while leaving all user settings and documents in tact. I know this is easily done when upgrading your Windows OS, so I'm assuming the case is the same when downgrading. |
| empirestate | 03-17-2016 01:52 PM | Re: Ssd I highly discourage downgrading. |
| a311hanna | 03-17-2016 02:05 PM | Re: Ssd Yeah thanks but I don't see anywhere that says use iso image file? The rest of it before this I could follow |

I highly recommend it. It's the easiest way for OP to keep their browser profiles in tact while changing to a less resource intensive VM OS.
Why exactly would you discourage downgrading? Win 7 is terrible for VMs :smash:
@OP - Glad you figured it out :) Things will be much smoother now! |

@OP - Glad you figured it out :) Things will be much smoother now! | Sorry another question. But I see only Firefox for browser on xp? Is that fine to use Firefox or should I install ie? As I thought if different browser then it would be like a new person etc? Not sure if Firefox is fine or if I should install ie. | | All times are GMT -5. The time now is 03:57 AM. | |
