It's plug and play. Learn to install an OS and you are all set.

An SSD is replacement to a mechanical hard drive. Remove the mechanical hard drive from your computer and just plug in the SSD. Boot up your OS and install.

Easiest way to do things is to find installation and instruction videos on Youtube.
And SSD is definitely the way to go. I replace every single new laptop I get to have the fastest SSD I can find.

Using XP would make your VM's 10x faster. There are tons of torrents out there. If you aren't torrent savvy, any version of Linux would be faster than Win 7.

SSD's are great and can potentially speed up your computer a ton, but I honestly don't think upgrading to an SSD would have much of an impact on the performance of your VMs. You would have to match your hard drive upgrade with a nice RAM upgrade to really be able to tell any difference. Reason being is each VM eats up a ton of RAM, because each VM uses the same amount of RAM as a regular computer.

So you can either spend hundreds of dollars upgrading your RAM and hard drive, or simply downgrade your virtual operating system.

Personally, I have 23 Windows XP VMs. Each one gets either 1gb or 512mb of RAM and 10gb HDD space. I run them seamlessly on a 6 year old laptop with 4g RAM, lol.

SSD all the way.

I have a dinosaur all-in-one desktop with a mechanical drive... all it's used for is a kitchen computer playing YouTube. I almost threw it in the trash but it has a purpose again..

SSD all the way.

An SSD by itself will not increase the performance much of Windows 7 VM's. :(

Go Windows XP if you still feel sluggish.

Can't he just add and shift the OS to SSD for booting?
