Default .com vs .net

Hello All,

I'm geared up, and ready to start a "real" website, not this third party store (Auctiva, BuyItSellIt, etc.) crap I've been trying.

I've got a few different domains that I'm considering, but some of the them are only available as .NET or .ORG. According to people on digitalpoint, sitepoint, and a few other forums, there really isn't any difference as far are search results are concerned.
  • Does anyone have anything different to say on the subject?
  • What benefits are there to buying them all, if available (.com, .net, .org, .info, etc.) I understand the possibility of someone stealing traffic, but what other benefits are there?

I read somewhere that some people BLOG on a .info site, and have links to their .com site.
  • Why not BLOG on the .com site, and drive traffic directly to it?

I am a member of several forums, and was planning on adding the address to my signatures, so I could start getting the address out.
  • Do these count as "backlinks"? I noticed that some of the forums convert the link into text, so I'm assuming the answer in no.

These are just a few of the questions I can think of, but I'm sure I'll have many more.

Thanks in advance for any assistance that you may provide.

Aspkin,
I've been thinking about buying your web ebook, are these topics covered?

Thanks,
Sevn

Hi Sevn, yes these points and more are covered in Webmaster Blueprint (Webmaster Blueprint – Learn How to Build & Market Your Own Business Step By Step!)

If I were you I would go for the .com domain name. If you're starting a new business and you want it to be your main website for many years trust me.. .com is the way to go.

And make sure your domain name is short, clever, easy to remember, etc.. but .com for sure.

aspkin, does this also mean you should have main keyword in your domain?

Kind of depends on what you are trying to do. If you are creating a personal site for yourself and your friends and then expand it bigger...unique name seems to be the way to go. But if you are doing affiliate marketing I suggest using the keyword you are targeting in the domain name for sure. Seems to have worked GREAT for me.

From all I have heard, If you ever want to sell your site, having a .com is worth much more than any other domain extension.

Also, From my experience, .info domains require much more work to rank in the Google serps. I believe from my experience that google discounts .info sites. But hey, if you want to go for one,all the best.
