Lookin for a new laptop/Netbook,What spec/s should i be looking for

forumites...

Lookin for a new laptop for a xmas present for a family member...

it does not need to be owt special

i need to know what processors are the best and how much RAM is enough etc

i want it to be fast/ish with good memory:juggle:

any recommendations would be great, i am looking to spend no more than £200 quid on this so i know its gonna be a squeeze but i know there will be the ideal gift out there somewhere.....

thx:pop2:

GreenBean 11-27-2011 06:23 AM

Might be pushing to get brand new for that price. Most are refurbrished models with limited warranty.
Possibily look at a price range up to £300 . I would think you would not want a small screen? :pop2:

FandangoKango 11-27-2011 06:24 AM

You need $600.00 for a good computer.

1. 3-4gb is fast memory
2. Intel i3 or i5 and anything i and up is good.
3. Only get dual core or quad core.
4. Windows 7 or apple is still good.
5. 250gb of hard drive and up is good.
6. Make sure cam and microphone comes with it so you can watch eachother.
7. Make sure it comes with 5 year warranty if your such a nice friend. If your not nice then you will just let it sit with the 1 year warranty.

:)

GTB 11-27-2011 06:28 AM

only can spend £200 max on this present:doh:

it does not have to be the best laptop

just the best for the money i can spend on it

dont get the ghz and ram etc

GreenBean 11-27-2011 06:32 AM

that's the speed and how much memory is in the 'guts' so to speak.

Ok, then refubrished is the way to go.
I prefer Toshiba although Acer are OK.
Have a gander at the pm, GTB :pop2:

GTB 11-27-2011 06:48 AM

will do

ah so ram is your memory,,,e.g 200gig of memory

and ghz is speed, what about processor then, whats the best for my price range

GTB 11-27-2011 06:51 AM

wait a min,i thought your hard drive is the memory

unkown5454 11-27-2011 03:29 PM

No one needs refurbs. I turn and burn BRAND NEW Acer and eMachines laptops all the time, spending no more than $200-$300 USD. Even Lenovo's are getting close to that price range.

GTB 11-27-2011 03:32 PM

acers are looking good man

biggunn 11-27-2011 11:55 PM

Agreed, Acre's are good. Main specs are to get at least 4gb memory/ram, minimum 500gb hard drive, dual core processor, and of course windows 7. I also recommend a 1080 display.

In very simple terms:

Ram=Memory
Hardrive=Where your files are stored
Processor(CPU)=Speed of the computer

I somewhat agree with what Fandagokango said, but I just had to add more to it

No AMD love?

the word Apple and Budget doesn't work well in one sentence. Also, Apple is not a OS, comparing it to Windows 7 is like comparing a car to a fire hydrant.

I wouldn't recommend anything less than 500GB tbh

Nearly all laptop comes with only a year of warranty with plans that allows you to extend it up to three years maximum, five years of warranty for computers are very rare. Warranty isn't as important as the actual hardwares themselves though.

You're also forgetting graphics card. If you play any games, then you should consider getting a laptop with a nvidia chipset. The latest Intel i5 and i7 paired with nvidia mobile gpus have a very neat feature that allows the system to switch between the intel gpu and nvidia gpu depending on the graphics demand, and to maximize power saving.

Also, NEVER by any HP pavilion laptops. Most of them are known to overheat.

unkown5454 11-28-2011 03:45 AM

Those of you recommending i5, i7, 500GB+ harddrive, advanced GPU units must have forgotten OP said £200 quid budget for this.

Unless I'm miscalculating the conversion rate, there is no way in hell OP can get those specs for that price so why waste the thread space and confuse OP even more. Even Black Friday for us here in USA had no laptop in that price range for just a 500GB harddrive, much less a godd*mn i5/i7 processor.

Time for the laptop expert to put it some info.

If you are insure of what laptop to get I would go to this website for help
What Notebook Should I Buy?
I have been a member on there for years and provide info to people all the time.

5 year warranties are only in place mostly for business class laptops like the HP elitebook or probook and the Dell business laptops (forgot the name). Most new laptops come with 1 year standard warranty.

If you are looking or a laptop you have to ask yourself what are going to do with it, gaming, basic stuff like email/homework or advanced editing with pictured or movies.

Most likely your searching for a laptop for basic things. I would into into an Acer or Asus. They have the lowest warranty issues according to a SquareTrade article that I read last year. SquareTrade provides extended warranty when the standard manufacturer warranty runs out. So these guys know what they are talking about.

Min specs for a basic laptop,
1. 250gb hard drive or more--the thing where all your files go or saved on including the opertaing system
2. your operating system has to be 64bit and not 32bit. 32bit OS will only have access to a max of 3.2gb of system memory, 64bit OS doesn't have that problem.
3. the min amount of system memory has to be 4gb or more, min is 4gb of system memory.
4. try to get windows 7 64bit or you can get away with windows XP but get the pro version of it (32bit), don't get Vista, just don't. But all new computers today come with windows 7.
5. get a min of a dual core processor, any speed will do.

As for the processor or cpu, in your price range I would search for a AMD processor since those tend to be cheaper and in cheaper laptops. I would search for the AMD fusion based A6 or A8 processor. AMD processors are not as fast as Intel based ones but there on board graphics chip in the Fusion is 4-6 times faster then the graphics on the Intel one. It's almost as fast as some low end Nvidia or AMD graphics cards.

As for the graphics cards, well you have 3 choices, Intel, AMD(ATI), or Nvidia.
And there is integrated and dedicated graphics. Integrated is when the graphics chip/processor is located on the motherboard or on the processor itself. Dedicated is when the graphics processor as its own board attached to the motherboard or its built into the motherboard.
The AMD Fusion has its own graphics chip located on the processor, oh and the integrated graphics tend to have longer battery life but the graphics is usually a lot slower then dedicated graphics. I would say the AMD Fusion is the best of both worlds if your not a gamer.

*edited--Ouch the conversion rate is $311 to US dollars.

ok for that much, ditch the AMD fusion processor but still go for AMD since they are cheaper overall then Intel based ones. I would also look into used older core 2 duo processor laptops.

Oh and I forgot to ask if you wanted a used, refurbished or new laptop and what screen size are you looking for? But still try out the link I provided.

Most laptop in that price range are used ones or small nettop laptops with screen size of 10 inches.

GTB 11-28-2011 06:42 AM

thanks for everyones input

yotano thanks for that

will check out that link now and when i find one i will let you know so ya can see if its a good deal:)

yotano211 11-28-2011 06:53 AM

Ok when you find a nice laptop in your price range shot me a PM and I will look at it.

I would also check out EB also for laptops. Sometimes I see some great deals on laptops on EB. That link also has a selling section or Market at the very bottom of the main forum page called NBR Market. Usually the people selling their laptops on there are cheaper or have better specs vs the ones on EB.

GTB 11-28-2011 07:26 AM

is that only usa though

lookng to buy from uk to avoid potential customs issues

yotano211 11-28-2011 07:45 AM

I'm sure you can buy laptops on EB from the UK.

That NBR place also have people in the UK too, just ask them or post a Want to But listing in the Market place and put in the UK only.

GTB I just bought an 'acer aspire one' for £135 on ebay... Has 160 gig storage and 1gig memory

It's got a 10" screen which is small, but that makes it more portable

Does everything I need it to though :) They are going for £200+ on amazon

That sounds like a good deal for a small netbook or laptop but you really need more system ram in there. 1gb of ram is not enough even for windows xp yet alone windows 7. I'm sure it only has one memory slot so you need to take out the memory module and replace it with a higher capacity one. Don't worry upgrading memory is the simplest thing in the world.

So easy even a caveman can do it

ingle92protege 11-28-2011 08:09 AM

I don't know, I have windows xp on it and it's fast enough

But yeah, some more memory couldn't do any harm :D
