Advise about IP etc

i just called my internet provider to see if i have a stadic or dynamic connection and he told me, i have a dynamic connection and that i am not even connected with a ip address i am connecting through an email on my account? what does this mean.how then can i change my ip address?

mine 09-11-2009 09:07 AM

Was he talking about your login?

decaljunkie 09-11-2009 10:23 AM

yes, i think i figured it out. when i called the customer support for them to show me how to change my ip address, i got different stories, on how to do this from a couple of people i talked to from customer support! one of them walked me through the process to do this, told me to go to network connection then right click and go to properties then go to internet protocol , and change it manually. by changing the last tree digits of my ip address and press ok . i did this and opened the command black screen from run . then typed in ipconfig to check if it changed.it showed that it changed, so i opened up another user account, and made a new paypal account with my new bank and new name ect.
i did not open a ebay account yet because i am waiting on the small deposits to verify my paypal.i called my customer support for internet back to see if i had a dynamic or static ip address, this guy told me i had a dynamic ip and that when i changed my ip address manually it wall show that it is changed in the command box, but it is really not changing from the main office. so i looked up my ip address on ipburger.com and sure enough it did not really change. so does this mean that my new paypal account that i just made waith all new info , is linked already, and have to start over. please tell me this is not true.

It means you could be linked.

The instructions you were given only changed your LAN IP. That is not the one you needed to change. You need your WAN IP to change.

Check these two threads and use the one that is appropriate to you:

Dynamic IP Address

I was told the same thing thru AT&T. Their browser IP address always changes.
The browser picks a new IP address every time that is available. AT&T has the dynamic IP

^^^^^^^^^^^

There is more than one IP for each computer.
LAN IP
HFC IP
Public IP
Private IP
WAN IP

They gave him instructions on how to change LAN IP, which is useless. He and you and everyone else needs to change WAN IP.

Claire Voyant 09-11-2009 04:32 PM

I turned the power off for the cable box, everything went off, including the TV!! Everything came back on after I turned the power back on. Good grief! Everything is connected, cant get away with doing that for very long !
Your advise and help is always greatly appreciated

Vicvelcro 09-11-2009 04:35 PM

Just remove the little round plug from the back of the modem, next time.

Claire Voyant 09-11-2009 05:02 PM

Ok, just tried that, everything went out again. Good Lord, how can being connected to AT&T interrupt with the TV also??? Must be a secured loop between everything. This is not going to be easy is what I am thinking here.

i disconnected my 2wire modem for 20 seconds, then restarted my computer, and then looked up my ip on ipburger.com and it changed on there, doese this mean i changed myWAN IP ?

Vicvelcro 09-11-2009 06:19 PM

Re #10:

Yes it does mean that you changed the WAN IP. That's exactly what you want.

decaljunkie 09-11-2009 06:35 PM

ok so i now know how to change my ip correctly, should i still try to open a ebay account and link it to the new pp account? or should i star over again?:spy:

Vicvelcro 09-12-2009 03:14 PM

decaljunkie,

The PP you created may still be fine. Depends on whether you were under a new windows user account or if you were using the same windows user account with old cookies floating around.

To be safest, make a new PP. Then make your new ebay.

Reasonably, I'd say give it a couple days while the deposits clear. If all is well, then open your ebay.

If you KNOW you had old cookies, MAKE EVERYTHING ALL NEW.
