My ridiculous IP problem

Hi, guys.

I've been on this forum for about 2 months now, I bought an account and digged through a lot of posts here trying not to ask our members stupid newbie questions and instead saving all helpful info into my user CP....it seemed I was ready to join your crowd..but...my problems with changing IPs have been killing me

I have Optimum online provider and my modem IP is dynamic (static are assigned only to businesses).. I went through different things trying to change it (turning it off for 2 days, changing my MAC address on a router, changing IPs in Vista, etc) ... Nothing worked...

Then i got a new Iphone with a new AT&T contract.. I planned to go for tethering...Guess, what? I screwed up again...My Iphone turned out to be firmware version 3.1.3...which means no tethering...

I decided to get AOL but my phone stopped working last week and I can't fix it!!!!

What else can I do? Should i go with Verizon mobile card????? Is it the only option that is left???

Thank you again for your advise :cheer:

Hello :yar:

I have Optimum Online also and I think you meant the modem is STATIC, not DYNAMIC.
Dynamic are assigned to businesses. The only way you get a new IP is if you unplug everything out the modem and wait 48 hours. I did that once to see if it works but I won't do it again since it stops my phone service.

The easiest and fastest way to get a new IP is to get the Verizon broadband mobile card($60 a month) Or you can sign up for a contract with Verizon DSL which is $20 a month.

Is it $20 for the whole contract time? or $20 for the first6/12 months then jumps in the price? how long dose the contract have to be?

If you have an iphone get a tether program or use dial-up network on your iphone check a program called pdanet. I think that was the name of it.

You'll need to jailbreak your iPhone for that to work.

If I were you I would go with either the broadband wireless card or the cheap dsl if it's available in your area.

Dump the cable if it isn't working for you.

Thank you, oge!
I checked a few of your posts regarding this matter..
I also found a pdanet program online and read reviews on it...I checked other jailbreaking programs...Nothing can be done with my Iphone except breaking it :(

If you already have AOL, go to Walmart and buy $5 phone.
If you have dynamic IP all you need to do is to go into CMD directory and hit ipconfig /release to change your IP.

I don't understand the need for all those exotic networking options when the most straightforward solutions work the best.

I don't have AOL, I have Optimum Triple Play (TV, phone, cable).
I did try to change my IP in a CMD directory, performed all the steps, was able to change my IP but lost my Internet connection :(... I tried so many times and sooo many ways ... believe me...Thank you anyway!

A little update..
Today i went to one of the local Verizon stores to buy a Verizon broadband mobile card...The guy told me there are 2 plans (with a contract) for them, one has 250 MB and costs $30, the other provides 5 GB and costs $60...Gush...The ones that don't require a contract have just 100, 250 and 500 Mb of data and cost $20, $40 and $50...

I can't afford $60 extra :( per month just to change my stupid IP :( I pay for my Optimum Internet and have two Iphone Internet service plans ($30 each)...I also have WiFi at home and can connect to someone to get online..Why is it so hard for me to start stealthing???

Your OOL cable setup can easily hop IP address, if your hardware is average stuff.

First, if the modem they gave you has the router built into the modem (one combined unit), the easy way won't work. So if this is your situation, ignore the rest of this post.

If your router is one unit and your modem is another unit (2 separate devices), you have it easy.

1. unplug the power to the modem but leave the router on.
2. enter your router setup (usually from your browser http://192.168.1.1)
3. find the setup page that indicates your WAN MAC (not LAN MAC)
4. change the WAN MAC by 1 single digit. The very last digit in the MAC.
5. Save or apply the new MAC address.
6. Power off the router.
7. Power on the modem.
8. wait 10 seconds then power on the router.
9. wait 20-60 seconds for the two units to introduce themselves.
10. IP Chicken - Whats my IP address? ip address lookup to see what your IP is.

Note. If you are looking at your ip address from your ethernet status page, you are looking at the wrong IP address. Your computer has multiple IP addresses. The LAN IP, the HFC IP, the WAN IP, and possibly others depending on your hardware.

The only one that matters to you and stealth is the WAN IP.
