Default Some mac addresses are giving me a new IP each time

Now that may sound appealing, but I much more prefer controlling the same MAC/IP

[Cable setup]

Some of the MACs I use always give me the same IP. Simple, safe and easy to monitor

But some are never the same IP twice.

What would be the factor here I am missing? Must have something to do with MAC used. So I even let the router pick one itself with a hard reset. But that mac also gives a new IP each use.

When you are switching between MACs, the IP that you would have been using changes because its assigned to someone else in your neighborhood. I use the same setup, it safe like you said!

Not sure I completely get what you are saying.

The macs that keep giving me a new IP are the same as someone else in my systems area? I just need to keep trying different ones until I find one that keeps the same IP?

Well i find that when changing from MAC to MAC sometimes the IPs it gives you are the same, sometimes they change. I do not have a 100% answer but i think that the IP changes because it has been assigned to a different MAC on a different street.

IP Addresses expire after 24 hours of that MAC address not being used. Sometimes you will get lucky and it will have the same IP, but most the time you won't after 24 hours.

Right. So it wont even matter if I don't use every day anyway. Never thought about that

depends on the type of network you are at. basiclly if its dynamic range 2 people cannot have same ip adress so it gives you 1 available adress from the network ... if its static network then you will get ip conflict if you use some1s ip ...

Speaking of changing MAC adresses...

I've been having problems with this for awhile... maybe someone here can shed some light for me.

My ISP is Shaw, I have a modem, and a seperate Netgear Wireless Router. I am more than slighty computer illeterate, but was able to figure out that I could change my MAC address through the settings menu of the router. However, I've only been able to use 2 MAC addresses - any other MAC address I input gives a IP address of all 0's, and no internet service. Can anyone tell me if there is something I'm missing? Ideally, I'd like to be able to switch between 4 different MAC/IP addresses on a daily basis.

With shaw I noticed some macs I tried wouldn't work. Maybe a conflict. So I would hard reset the router and let it create a mac itself. Took a few attempts but after awhile I was able to get a handful to work with.

Also, some macs I need to reboot everything for them to click including modem. Some just the router

And if your shaw modem has a USB connection as well that will also give you a different IP without using router. You can even use it at the same time on two computers with two different IPs. One connected via netcard and one usb.

Thanks Pod.

I was having some problems getting my PS3 online last week - I figured I might have screwed something up when trying to change IPs earlier in the day on my PC - so I ended up doing a hard reset of the router to fix the problem. It worked, but it did give me the same MAC address and same IP I'd been using previously. I will try the hard reset again tomorrow... so I should hard reset the router, as well as the modem and computer too? Geez... I wish I'td paid more attention in computer class! But this is a better option than going out and buying yet ANOTHER router!

It will always vary with type of modem and router. I just played hit and miss with trial and error. I found a full reset of router worked. But I had to wait awhile between resets. An hour did the trick for me. I don't mean turning router off, I mean the reset button that clears everything
