go to IPburger.com and check the IP address. As long as it changes by as little as one digit, you are good.

Usually the router keeps the same IP address for 24hrs no matter the PC you are using on the other end. Switching PC's with the same router usually won't make a difference.

You will be better off connecting the PC directly to the modem without the router involved to get a new IP.

Worked like a charm for me, even using the router.

All you need to do is change the mac address when you login to the router. Worked great for me.

What is the purpose of doing this?

To change the ip address without unplugging the router/modem overnight.

So this is suggested for anyone with a static IP and not dynamic IP?

If you have a static ip, You can change the ip address manually by going into the router config settings can't you?

No, I am confusing you. What is going to be easier and safer to change the IP: either the unplugging method or signing into the router?

Either way is safe. Unplugging the router just takes longer because you have to hope someone else takes that IP address otherwise I believe it will stay the same. If you change the mac address you are garaunteed to have a different IP address. But after you change the mac address and the settings are saved, you will have to un-plug the modem and router for about 15 seconds and plug them both back in and you should have a new ip address.

Obviously make sure either way you check your ip by going to whatismyip or a site like that. I hope I helped!

I was very confused about this whole thing, too, a few weeks ago. I would suggest going to youtube and viewing some of the videos people have made about doing this. They are very educational and some of them are very amusing, as well. (My personal favorite was one where the guy making the video was showing how to spoof your MAC address in order to get back on the Playstation forums and at the end where he is able to get back on, he says in a very thick southern accent, "F*** You, Moderators," while flipping off his computer screen. That had me chuckling for several days, every time I thought about it.)

Just search for "Change IP Address" or "Spoof Mac Address" or "Change IP Address Router", etc.

Everyone, please keep in mind when you are attempting to change your IP, you MUST change the public IP. i.e. the one in your router or modem. If the computer is behind a router, it does not make any difference if the IP on the computer changes. The IP that the world sees, your public IP, usually stored in the router or modem is what makes the difference.

Hi I have a wireless router (Netgear) and internet with Brighthouse, trying to change my IP address and was wondering do I need to lose the router. I am not very computer savvy and desperately need some help. I have been suspended from EBAY for selling legitimate Tommy Hilfiger from the US into the UK. Mortgage payment due help!!!!! I have turned everything off overnight, days etc and the IP address didn't change. Called Brighthouse - not much luck either. Downloaded Ghost Surf - caught a computer virus! Minky:confused:

Some internet providers use what is called a Sticky IP... Meaning the IP address sticks with the MAC address in your router. Some router's will allow you to use a CLONE MAC address. Depending on your netgear, I'm pretty sure it's on the setup page. In there, you need to type in a difference MAC address, then reboot your router, and you should pull a difference IP. If that doesn't work, get a new router.

What is Brighthouse? Is it Satellite? Cable? DSL? or Wireless?
