EXTREME Computer illiteracy

OK so been through every post about changing ip address. Im extremely computer illiterate. Ive googled look through you tube and gone through post to figure it out and im lost. I have a cable modem (i think) its a motorola surfboard and need help figuring this out. Ive looked at the vps and vpn route but seems those arent good practices anymore. yes have an iphone but dont know a thing about jail breaking it. So if anyone could help I will be greatly appreciative.
Thanks

Have you tried, turning it off and on?

jscathey11 07-25-2013 04:11 PM

yes stays the same. tried the cmd thing but doesnt change it

JamesNorth101 07-25-2013 04:15 PM

Try unplugging it and leaving it for 5 minutes before turning it on.

Are you wanting to get a US IP address? If so you have no need of VPN and VPS's. Dongle may be your best option if you cannot get the IP address to change.

Who is your ISP? (internet provider)

You might have a static IP. This means it won't change.

However, you might not have a static IP.

First I would try leaving it off for a longer period of time, even over night.

In addition, think of other methods of connecting to the internet.

Cellular, dial up, etc...

jscathey11 07-25-2013 04:20 PM

Ive unplugged it for an hour or so. I use mediastream...only provider around here. Ive read about dongle but am clueless about that method. If dongle is best bet can anyone point me to the right kind?

Furious George 07-25-2013 04:20 PM

verizon wireless

jscathey11 07-25-2013 04:26 PM

so a prepaid verizon internet card?

JamesNorth101 07-25-2013 04:27 PM

Dongles are simple to work. If you take your laptop down to your local phone shop they should even be able to install it for you (depending on how nice they are)

When its installed, just a case of unplugging it and plugging it back in to get a new IP.

prepaid or a contract

With prepaid, you're paying for the equipment up front, and usually you get less service.

Just go get you a 4g aircard. It's free, and you can do a 2gb plan. It's very inexpensive for what it is, and it's super handy for other situations.

It is static. Will not change.

jscathey11 07-25-2013 04:58 PM

oh ok then....so what should i look for on a dongle

JamesNorth101 07-25-2013 05:00 PM

Coverage in your area, speed and download limits. Price may also be a factor.

GreenBean 07-25-2013 05:01 PM

Look at what FuriousGeorge said

Look for posts by MM78

You need to check reception for your area. Decide costs etc

iPhone is another option to use

Actually better question would be how many accounts are you considering having?

( need coffee;))

jscathey11 07-25-2013 05:04 PM

ok thank yall very much

Furious George 07-25-2013 06:59 PM

If you're going to use an iphone or an android as a hotspot, make sure you're logging the ip's.

The mobile hotspots will work just as well as a usb aircard. Verizon and sprint work well, so does ATT. (I don't like ATT or sprint, I've been sticking with verizon)

MM78 07-25-2013 07:39 PM

Verizon is a great service provider for USB Modems.

jscathey11 07-25-2013 08:22 PM

I have a verizon hot spot im gonna try. Thanks again to everyone that helped with my "illiteracy"

JamesNorth101 07-26-2013 03:20 AM

Best of luck
