I have used GiffGaff for over 3 years now. You dont need a mobile internet dongle to tether with. Most modern smart phones have a built in data modem and you can then either connect phone to your laptop / PC / tablet via a USB cable or set up your phone as a wifi hotspot and connect to your phone via wifi.
I think the trick with GiffGaff is not to go overboard with data. I use GiffGaff mobile internet just for surfing the internet and doing ebay stuff. I avoid downloading music / films and watching hours of youtube stuff. I've heard of people getting their GiffGaff data suspended for using over 20Gb per month which is taking the piss a bit, although they do offer so-called 'unlimited' data for £12 per month 'Goodybag'.
My own data usage per month is around 5-7 Gb which would cost a fortune on some of the other mobile networks - remember while some like Virgin etc claim to offer 'unlimited' or 'all you can eat' data, they then have a FUP (Fair Usage Policy) that restricts subscribers to a paltry 1Gb per month. Its pathetic really. The more 'smart' phones get and with this 4G faster mobile data coming out people are going to use more and more data than ever before, yet networks seem to be restricting the amount of data people can use.
