Is using a dial up modem possible ?

And how would I convert my current set up to run dial up ?

Is this even possible ?

JamesNorth101 08-07-2013 01:39 PM

Just need a modem. Rsot uses Dial Up a lot so may be able to give you more exact details :)

As far as I know you just dial out via the phone line using your computer inbuilt modem and your good to go.

MM78 08-07-2013 02:01 PM

Nothing really changes, Just need to dial-in and keep track of those IP changes.

rsot 08-07-2013 02:15 PM

Right on JamesNorth101.

@fuggles, you need an ACTIVE landline (dialtone provided by your local phone company) and modem for your computer - given that, you would need an access dial-in number and away you go.

For access to long distance access numbers (out of your country/region), you should look at a long distance plan otherwise it can get quite pricey - like a long distance call

MM78 08-07-2013 02:18 PM

@Fuggles, have you looked into a Dongle?

It is possible

It is doable

Main question is why?

What other options have you considered

how much do these cost ? I heard there was a monthly fee.

JamesNorth101 08-07-2013 04:54 PM

Some are on contract, but you can get PAYG as well. Look into T-mobile for the UK

You have to spend money to make money

:heh:

Dongles and cellphone tethering are MUCH better and FASTER options for you fuggles - keep dialup as a last resort O-S (Oh sh*t) option

Furious George 08-08-2013 10:48 AM

Dial up is awesome, IMO. You don't need a really fast connection for ebay anyway, and it's super quick and easy to change the IP. Plus, dial up is SUPER cheap.

rsot 08-08-2013 10:57 AM

+! Furious G - way to join the elite dialup crowd - also gives you access to a huge range of out of town IP's...

Funny thing....The place I live in now...has no Telephone connections! lol. I couldn't even do dialup if I wanted too! :pound:

The major advantage of a Dongle is I can take it with me anywhere with my laptop and Stealth from outside my home.

What is this DONGLE? And where do I get it? How does it work?

GreenBean 08-09-2013 05:28 AM

Explanation of a dongle.

These can be purchased on ebay, amazon or if you were signing up with a deal with different carriers.

As Greenbeen has posted....they are USB Modems, I am signed up with Verizon Wireless and I am using the following "Dongle":

You can use it on your Home PC and Laptop.

Can I get a pay as you go dongle, instead of a monthly fee one ?

Because I only sell on ebay about once a year, a clearout, so the monthly fee is useless to me.

okay I found this

Yep, why not? Dial-up gives you a fresh IP with each connect.. it might be TERRIBLY slow but if it's your only option, it works.

MM78 08-10-2013 11:53 AM

The problem you may run into is that you have to keep the dongle alive every month otherwise you may get cutoff.

If you only sell once a year you could just do it by tethering to your computer or some other cheaper method.

What is tethering ?

And they only cost about 2 pound each.

The dongle is infinite, I would assume.

You mean like no phone jacks in the wall? Or no landline provider in general?
