Getting a new IP questions
 

I have some questions regarding getting a new ip address. I have Charter cable running a motorola surfboard going to an apple extreme router/wifi. I made it to the point in the ebay stealth guide talking about the steps to get a new ip and this is where I am stuck.

From what I can tell, you can't do anything with mac addresses on the airport extreme. Secondly, Charter saddles me with a static ip (is that the right term?). I tried unplugging the modem for 5 minutes and replugging it in and according to IP burger my ip is the same after.

So what options does that leave me? I'm fairly computer smart so feel free to give me some guidance... I'll try anything.

Dongle (USB Modem) and phone tethering are your best alternatives if you have a static IP

when using a usb modem do you get a new ip each time you connect? That would be worth it right there....

unfortunately phone tethering isn't an option as I'm still grandfathered in on my work phone with unlimited data... if I open up tethering then I lose the unlimited data.

You would still need to track your IP address to make sure you do not link stealths by using the same IP. Take 10 seconds so well worth doing

What I like to ask is how many accounts are you thinking of running?

That way we can recommend cost effective methods.

I'll look up a thread where another user had a similar plan. Pretty sure we had a suggestion that was effective.

That leads to my next question. I just got off the phone with AT&T and they made the suggestion that the ip does NOT change.... i am trying to find a place I can test a dongle to verify that things change with each connection.

Interesting while I type this reply I have a verizon rep telling me their unit does change ip number with each connection....

From the many posts, the change of IP is usually a matter of how the IP is set up.

Broadly speaking it's a lease of bandwidth involved with IP allocation.

Dynamic change within a reasonably short time. Some that are called dynamic take ages to change. We call those sticky. Lastly some users have IPs that never change, the infamous static variety.

Another point to consider is to ensure reception will work for you.

I think it would be wise for me to at least at this point do two if not 3 in order to cover myself. I'm looking at the cost of having a dongle for a 2 year contract and I need to decide if the money i'm making is worth the cost I'll pay for the subscription. I made around $3000 via online deals (ebay sales and paypal invoices) so as long as I continue with that amount (or more), the numbers make sense.

Read through this and saw someone mention a Mifi device as an option... question on that. Is it just as simple as turning the device on and off to get a new ip assigned?

That's not true, I tether with my iPhone on ATT and I'm also grandfathered with unlimited data.

If you want a good dongle/service provider look into VERIZON, they have a nice large IP Pool.

That's who I was going to check out today. As for tethering on my iphone on at&t, it's through my work, so I don't have the say in what I can and can't do with it.

If you can stand slow speed, also look at dial-up as a viable option

Anyone have thoughts on using a netzero hot spot? for the minimal use i'll be using it, i like the monthly cost of that more than i do a verizon unit.

Called netzero and they couldn't say for certain that i'd receive a new ip with a power cycle... as much as I hate to admit it, it seems like the verizon is the way to go.

Another option thrown my way today at the store was their Ellipsis tablet that can do a hotspot. That kind of interests me in that you get your hotspot along with a tablet, but in all honesty i do not need another tablet (have an ipad and getting another from work soon). Another thought is the boot up time on the tablet if it'll take longer than the dedicated hot spot.... thoughts?

Either way it's going to cost me about $56 a month all in for the service... trying to figure out if I'll move enough merchandise to justify the cost....

I have ATT MIFI. At first I did not like it because the IP addresses change while you are in the middle of using it. I am assuming that the IP is still tracked as you are logged in as opposed to just when you first log in. But for the most part, I do not get very many reoccurring IP addresses. $50 for 5G

I had that issue with a verizon MIFI , WITH THE IP changing, I figured it out , before I connect to it as a hotspot I turn it on and keep it on for at least 20 mins , I find it will establish a nice connection with one IP , but if I turn it on and try to connect right away is when it changes IPs and the connection not so good.

Even turning it on a and waiting 10 mins is a huge difference , the connection seems stronger and lot more stable

I plan on getting a Mifi but was wondering if the IP does change every time the device is reset? Is there anything else that needs to be done in the settings of the Mifi in case the IP does not change? Changing the MAC address possibly? Thanks.

How are you seeing what the ip is without connecting to it first? Or are you saying before you log into ebay?
