| muzzie | 02-17-2016 06:56 PM | Re: I wonder how many virtual machines this gaming computer can handle The main issue is RAM, as XP consumes very little CPU power. If you give 1 GB of ram to each XP VM, it will fly like a rocket. So, 64 gigs of ram = 64 happy Win XP VMs, and that is without dynamic ram allocation, and with it you will be able to run around 2x more machines. Ram nowadays is quite cheap, so getting some rig with 128 Gigs of ram is not so fantastic. For example, for my stealth stuff, I run a 2U server with dual E2630 CPUs, and 128 gigs of ram, and it goes very smoothly with around 50 VMs inside (mixed Win 7 / 8.1 / Linux machines). And yes, video card is not required at all to run all these machines, as it is emulated as well by the hypervisor, and thanks to the Intel VTx technology, visualization overhead is very tiny. |

Re: I wonder how many virtual machines this gaming computer can handle Just so were clear, are we talking about how many VM's can be run ALL at the same time? |

| muzzie | 02-18-2016 05:14 PM | Re: I wonder how many virtual machines this gaming computer can handle Actually, with a proper setup, 100 of them may run at the same time... ;) |

Switching user accts on each vm, because on one computer, switching user accts and pushing the print label button is about 3-4 minutes from start to finish for me at least, and I do have an ssd. But let's say u run 10 vm, maybe I can cut the time down divided by 10, so u can print more labels. So as u push sign out of one user acct, the delay can be used to do something else on another vm. Just a thought. |
