For now... im pretty sure canada is safe, how can they close paypal ca? What would they use? Social Insurance Number? They cant, because its not like SSN a company cannot mandate anyone to provide their SIN and to deny service based on someone not providing their SIN is illegal. Lawsuit much?

I agree, for UK its the same, ive said all along ni is different to ssn.

I think if they ask for it one should refuse on legal grounds and ask for alternative.

I also think staying out of radar and not receiving more than the above blog limit is helpful.

We need all (non-US) forumers to refuse and see where it gets us, share our experiences on subsciber forum, that way we dont have to deal with any further bypass because we may not have to.

Wow! You just got hit with this ffdgh1? They hit me with all those about a year ago!
Here is EXACTLY what paypal says when you log into their site. This isn't just for businesses. f you are NOT a business they require you be one anyway to use their site.

Under the new legislation, PayPal will be required to report to the IRS the total payment volume received by PayPal customers in the US who:

Receive more than $20,000 in gross payment volume in a single year, AND
Receive 200 or more payments in a single year.
The IRS changes will apply to all payment providers, including PayPal. They will take effect on January 1, 2011, with the first reports going to the IRS in early 2012. Our goal is to help PayPal merchants to understand and comply with the new requirements.

If you meet the stated thresholds, you will be required to verify your identity by adding a SSN/TIN/EIN to your existing account. If you are currently using a Personal or Premier account, you will be required to upgrade to a Business account.

This is like Black Sunday for the DSS cards.........If anyone knows what that means......If you don't.......it means unless you can verify, you are dead in the water.

I do 200 on a good account in 2 months.. damn, better start making paypals!

surcerouche 01-18-2011 11:33 AM

mofetee that is EXACTLY how I feel right now....dead in the water..
I had a beautiful stealth that was mildly unmolested for one year plus.
Today after a transfer-no negative feedbacks mind you-
Bam...the big limitation where I need the SSN.
Stealth info + no ssn = dead in the water.
Back to the ones that are marinating I guess.
Dang...

you may have been selected because you sold more than 20K, and more than 200 transactions last year. this is how they decide right now on who will have to submit to the new disclosure regs regarding SS#s.

I kept all my accounts under 20k, and none of them have asked for that info yet, but who knows. I HATE giving that kind of information to 3rd party entities.

surcerouche 01-21-2011 09:41 PM

Truly it was a live and learn moment.
I had NEVER been that success on Feebay before.
Next ones, I will make certain not to be anywhere near those numbers per account.
Gotta say it....Thank goodness for the aspkin forums. :cheer:

Well Like everyone else i have been hit on my USA accounts with the SSN verification.
I have a solution that lets says has worked 50% of the time ( i'll take it!). Basically I can obtain a local SSN for the city my stealth "sim" lives in and create a SSN and double check it against a register. Then I am able to supply PayPal a scanned image of this SSN card as they request. Even though they cannot 100% verify it, they have accepted it 4 of 7 times so far as long as my other back up info is solid.

holymoly 01-22-2011 02:28 PM

Hey, not actually a bad idea...a very old topic. But a new look on everything! Congrats.

mariedraper 01-25-2011 11:25 PM

I requested a debit card for a account that was going great for about a year and now I am being asked for a copy of my ss card, drivers license, current bill. Geez, wonder if they need my dna.
I am an idiot for requesting a debit card in the first place, I could not be happy with a 3 day delay on my funds. ANyways, I have 14 days to fax or scan my info to them or they will close my accounts.
Time to start ALL over again!
has anybody opened a new paypal account lately? do they all require a SS now?

jbluntz 01-25-2011 11:32 PM

No paypal stilll doesn't require an ssn to open an account.
