can buyers reverse a payment they made earlier without notifying sellers

I got a payment yesterday from a low feedback buyer, but today when i check again, it is gone. i checked the "Sold" category the transaction shows as "refunded". I never refunded him. I went to paypal and it shows the payment was reversed early today. by whom i don't know.

How could this happen? Why did he do this?

Check your email that the paypal and ebay account are associated with. Likely it will say why. I'm guessing, it was probably a fraudulent transaction?

I think you are right. That is the only time I can remember when a payment was put "on hold" or reversed without a dispute.

A scammer stole a PayPal account, and used that account to pay you.

I'm curious was your item virtual?

Jesus, how did you know this?

so what are the implications, any risks to me that these are happening to me, should i take off all my listings now?

Yes i did check the paypal email , it says there is "potential problem" with the payment, and paypal reversed them. I looked carefully i I found 2 more reversals other than this one. I guess they got reversed before I know it is paid and ready for delivery.

So what are these buyers do? they stolen money to buy my virtual items, or they want to nail me down? these three reversal happens in 6 hours, and they all come from the same country.

What should i do now?

I'm Aspkin, that's how I know. Lol.. :)

Nah, I used to sell virtual items too, and these guys (scammers) went after us pretty hard. They like buying virtual items because they can usually receive it instantly, before the payment is reversed. They get your item, and go back and sell it to someone else.

You'll just have to be more careful who you do business with.

I had to resort to only dealing with confirmed and verified buyers, plus if it was a large order, I would verify their phone number, call them and if I could IP check them to make sure their IP address matched up with their confirmed address.

Fun stuff.. :)

emmmm, these guys must be paypal and ebay experts tooo! they know the tricks! they should come and join us instead of cheating some dollars. but it is hard to steal other peoples paypal account, and they know paypal will come after them, this is too risky, i don't understand they don't have a better option to make money?

so i am not at risk? i thought these guys may be doing sth against me so was very worried.

thanks heaps!

^^^n4spd,
Scammers know many tricks. Aspkin knows even more. Take on board the recommendations for future sales. Always know your enemy, oops, buyer;)

eta: the reversal of payment was generated by paypal in this case.

Eh, they just phish for user names and passwords. Nothing too technical about that.

Actually if they were smart they wouldn't get caught as fast as they usually do, but I'll leave it at this.

Hi Aspkin:
Talking about virtuals. I just got a removal and alert today, because I put the info" items are delivered electronically" as picture format in my listing. ebay removed it and in its message it copies what I write on picture format as evidence.

So does that mean someone reported me to ebay, or ebay has this technology to read words from pictures?

Is there a better way to sell virtuals at all?
