If your landline/mobile network provider offers addons, there's bound to be one where you can call the US for an additional £5/month or so.

Never used Skype before, they offer a package at £2.40 a month for US calls to mobiles and landlines. Would this be the correct package to use?

Yep that sounds like it would do the job

Check the VOIP mobile apps on your phones app store as well

There are some that are pretty cheap that allow you to call international
