New update about 21 day hold!

"eBay’s latest seller news letter says they’re introducing 21 day PayPal holds for all new sellers. For 90 days from your first sale the new security step will hold funds as “This will help new sellers to build up a reputation as a trusted member of the eBay selling community”.

There is some good news for existing sellers with a past track record – if you’re setting up a new selling ID you can link it to an existing eBay account and the PayPal holds won’t then apply to you. There’s no information currently on how to link them so I’d suggest PowerSeller support.

This step, although designed as a security step to ensure buyers don’t lose out (by which I guess I mean so that PayPal don’t lose out if a seller turns out to be unreliable), is going to be devastating for new sellers.

I remember when I started out on eBay and cash flow was essential – postage costs rack up at an alarming rate and the ability to access cash quickly enables these costs to be paid. With PayPal holds new sellers will be unable to withdraw funds for three weeks, or even to use payments to fund PayPal postage payments – the upfront investment in selling on eBay has just risen significantly for smaller sellers.

As with all PayPal holds funds may be released before the 21 days if the item delivery is confirmed or if positive feedback is received. "

Pretty convenient how every time they help sellers "build their reputation" it also helps build eBayPal's rolling reserves of $$$.

So when you first open a stealth account sell at least one item right away. Then let it sit for 90 days. So I suggest everyone get on opening some new accounts now!!!

cardfelon 03-22-2010 10:41 AM

Well I have a brand new seller account that is 2 weeks old. I had 10 items end last night and 8 of the 10 payments didn't have holds placed on them by Paypal. I'm sure it has to do with if it is a high risk item or not

vigilantex69 03-22-2010 12:45 PM

They will hold the funds for 90 days despite if I get 20 positive feedback and good DSR's? They would have to release it sooner, nobody is going to let them hold their funds for 3 months no matter what.

cardfelon 03-22-2010 12:48 PM

I think they mean during the first 90 days all the funds are subject to 21 day holds.

jbluntz 03-22-2010 01:02 PM

The holds go away after you recieve 20 dsr's, I don't know where this 90 day thing came from, I can't wait 90 days to pay my rent.

jbluntz 03-22-2010 01:08 PM

After reading the article it's saying that 21 day holds are applied to accounts less than 90 days which sounds better but I'm not sure where they got that info from.

KulldeeSak 03-23-2010 12:10 AM

I can confirm the above info is correct I got an Email/Sellers newsletter (usuall latest stuff/whats happening monthy email) now normally I just delete these without reading. But I was considering up the pros and cons of becomming a powerseller as just been invited and reading through all emails thoroughly at the time.
Also from April there tighening up the DSR ratings for sellers. This might just be a UK thing if you guys havnt heard anything.

I'm feeling the sting of this 21-day hold. All it's really doing is slowing my business down and adding another small problem to the list.

Believe me, you aren't the only one feeling the sting. It's slow all of us down. ebay.ca here i come!!!

It's not just for new accounts... If you have a two year old account with 200 feedback score but all you did was buy with that account, the first item you sell on that account will be subject to the 21 day policy. Age of the account doesn't matter, it all depends on selling history. Also positive feedback or delivery of item can still release your payment earlier. The policy hasn't changed, just who it affects. I wouldn't be surprise if you haven't sold within 30 to 45 days after your first sale, that you would have to start all over with the 90 days, that way it will stop people from what I like to call "seeding and planting accounts". To me, I believe ebay is trying to get away from the "make a quick buck" niche.

aking 03-23-2010 01:34 PM

Well, I read that internet scams have risen by like 30% from last year. Due to the financial crisis last year, scamming has gone up so eBay has to do something to protect innocent buyers.

It sucks that some people are taking advantage of what was a perfect system and now it is affecting us all directly. I am going to get my website back up and running, eBay just isnt consistant enough for me, it seems every month there's some kind of new rule that comes into play and I have to totally restrategize how I sell my items making it EXTREMELY hard to run a business.

We are all at the mercy of ebay and paypal, and I do not want to be any longer. I want to be in control on my own destiny!!

You guys all must be running new accounts, I don't even start selling my main products until I get 20 dsrs from selling ebooks, I never have to deal with the 21 day hold.

arsgunner77 03-23-2010 08:48 PM

i dont understand all this crying about the 21 day hold...its been said a million f'n times..it basically happens when a new sellers account starts selling and they dont hold every payment until you get 20 DSR,ive never had them hold every payment and in the last year, ive only had one payment go the full 21 days

i just dont get why you guys make a big deal over the smallest things, what are you guys selling? vero clothes or something? i just laugh at almost every thread nowadays

and really who the hell starts selling right away on a brand new account, ive never ever done that, maybe thats why i rarely get these 21 day holds

i just started 2 stealth accounts within the last 2 weeks..older account selling 10-15 dollars items, got 21 day hold on almost all payments,2nd account was not as old and was selling 30-40 dollar items and didnt get one hold

its pretty random how they choose..depends on what you sell,if you have a brand new ebay account, chances are there going to hold your payment until you get 5-10 feedback(this is from my experience),and yes someone said above even if you have an account 10 years old with 400 feedback and you start selling, they will hold payment

but really who cares..this is business and i completely understand what paypal is doing,if you guys dont understand the 21 day hold, than i dont know what to tell you, just keep crying on an open forum how about how ebay/pp have ruined yer life over holding money for 21 days(when in most cases, its released wayy earlier) wahhhhhhhhhhhhhh:tears:

OfficialGenius 03-23-2010 08:55 PM

Seriously. It's so simple. You ship the item as soon as the buyer pays. I always ship priority so that's just 2-3 days. After item shows DELIVERED that's when they will RELEASE payment. Either when it shows DELIVERED or when they leave POSITIVE feedback. AGAIN that's just 2-3 days. NO BIG DEAL!

jbluntz 03-23-2010 09:59 PM

Or if you do it the way I mentioned above it's 0 days, since I only ship when the money is in my hands.

terell05 03-24-2010 07:08 PM

Oh I'm not complaining... I found a way around the 21 day hold. I wanted to point out that dsr doesn't apply to the 21 day hold anymore, so if sold an item 45 days after your first sale it's gonna be placed on hold regardless if your account dsr is 20 or above.

Ebay_Victim 03-28-2010 05:15 AM

i sell $0.99, 8 items has been automatically released, the rest hasnt yet..samples, coupons.,.etc..and this is my 1st week..start another new account for backup..these are brand new accounts, 1+ week old..just start another one for backup..i got these accounts from here. im going to get a couple more and start like it again

When did this happen? I just got through setting up 10 accounts with 20 dsrs just recently and no holds. But doesn't really anyway if you have plenty of inventory, it's only a problem for dropshippers.
