Can someone please explain this whole paypal fee/refund thing?

Ok, I have a buyer who won an item yesterday and paid this afternoon and just won another auction that ended of mine and sent a seperate payment right after. I was going to refund both payment and request one payment because of the hefty paypal fees and this is what I found and cant understand (the amounts are not the actual amounts of the transaction, just an example).

Total won/paid for first auction: $50
Less fees: $5.64
Net: $44.36

But when I go to refund it says total to be refunded by seller less refunded paypal fees is $48.90

What the hell???? I only NETed $44.36. Why are not ALL the fees refunded to me???? Thanks!

Because... that's the fees. Don't worry about it, it's right . Just do a full refund on both

So either way, I will still lose money for refunding in order for the person to make one payment? Thanks!

Huh? If you do a full refund, PP will also refund their fee portion of the transaction. So you got an even 0 balance. You don't lose anything.

That is what I always thought, but that is NOT the case right now. You can actualy go into your paypal account right now and just click on a transaction from a buyer's payment....click on refund payment....and see what comes up.....completely different amount in fees.....is this something new? I maybe refunded 5 times in my 8 years of ebaying and never noticed this until now. If that is the case then there would be no need for me to refund both this buyers payments in order to receive one payment because I would then just be charged fees again! Can anybody clear this up? Thanks!

This is what made me notice it.....all my auctions end on Sunday nights, 99% of my buyers pay that night because I ship on Monday. I print out labels and pay ebay fees and then transfer to my bank that very same night. Well this one buyer didnt pay until this afternoon and I actually did some one day auctions that ended today and she sent a seperate payment right after she won another of my auctions. So HER payments were the ONLY payments that were in my paypal account at the time.....so given if I refunded both payments I should then have a zero balance, well that wasnt the case and that made me actually look at the paypal transaction fee then my net and then the amount that I I I I would have to refund MINUS the STATED paypal fee REFUND which was ALOT less than what paypal really charged. SO I am wondering if now there is a portion of the payment that paypal doesnt refund????????
