paypal dispute deferred??

Got an email saying a buyer was unhappy with his purchase, mainly because he hasnt received the item which he is located in canada and the tracking shows it left the country. I sold it back on Oct 31st so is way beyond the 45 days for the dispute. No contact since then i get this email from paypal saying something about deferred dispute, what does this mean?

It could mean that the buyer cried to paypal & they extended the 45 day dispute limit.

This has happened. That 45 days to dispute is not set in concrete.

What was the value & can you follow up on the tracking?

I've had a few deferred disputes in the past on one account. Its not a case you have to answer as you would an INR case. Paypal are asking you to refund the buyer, if you don't then nothing will happen - you will have no case history in your seller performance.
I never refunded mine, it all depends if you have a guilty conscience.

They say the deferred dispute will be noted on your Paypal account, I think I had three and nothing happened and the account is still active. They usually happen around this time of year when people have ordered items before Christmas and forgot they have ordered them, they remember and its over 45 days. If they follow it it PyaPal will give you the deferred dispute notice.

Do you have any tracking beyond the border? You might have issues if it doesnt show delivery.

no tracking beyond the border, the order was for $40 but if he filed a dispute with ebay their would've been the chance ebay would've covered it(ebay covered the last oversees dispute i had for $35 in november)

$40 and pp deferred the dispute - wow they are getting worse than ever. Usually items from US to CA dont have too much trouble to reach
