Re: Getting a Paypal Debt Mastercard
I just went thru this with Paypal. I opened a legit account in my real name. I registered the PP account with my first initial (not my full first name) and last name. All was good. The account was fine. I wanted the Debt card to access my funds so upgraded to the Premier account and applied for the card. Wham. Limited access. Why? Because of only using my first initial. I had to submit photo ID (pick one: drivers license, passport, student ID), copy of a utility bill for proof of address and social security card (or pay stub with SS# on it). I submitted these documents and called Paypal and agent said the issue was using my first initial only and she had to change my account to my full name to match the name exactly to the documentation submitted. I told her I didn't have to submit this many documents to my bank to open an account and they were only Paypal (I was furious). She said they verify your identity with other records/agencies and PP considers their debt card a legal financial product same as their credit card and require all this ID. She also required a street address to mail the card to. Not a PO Box, a street address and it had to match up to the utility bill. She lifted the limited access and issued the debt card. Not sure if I would have to submit all this documentation if I used my full name for the first round but it seems they match your name, SS# and address to outside records. One red flag or something not matching up and your account will be limited. Dicey business.
Also, I told her I wanted to use only my first initial on my account to protect myself (man or woman?) and she said if I could upgrade to a business account and then use a business name on the account. Not sure if the debt card would be reissued / issued in a business name if you apply for the debt card as a business account. Would they ask for a name / SS# or would a business name and tax ID be enough? Wondering.
