Get a paid cell phone number, then port to free so I can keep it?
 

I'm planning to get a Tracfone for a new fresh number, then at the end of the free time, port it to a google voice account. That way it'll be a fresh number and be free for the future.

I've had real accounts for 10 years, but never had any phone calls. Should the TF number last longer since it's from a real carrier? How does this sound?

If you keep paying for the Tracfone, it will remain active. You may or may not get a phone call - depends on your activity

More as a safety measure, it is suggested to keep a phone active.

Like you I have had few phone calls. Yet I nearly lost an account once because I had not noticed the time had expired.

Tracfones are among the more successful ones if used correctly.

If I port it to google voice then it will still be active, and forward calls to another linked phone. I was just thinking I don't want to carry 10 phones. Mainly I just don't want a recycled number or one labeled voip.

T-Mobile prepaid is $10 for 3 months. Better than Tracfone?

Tracfones need re loaded after 90 days or your google voice wont send a message to it.
