U.S Custom seized package

I have been trying to explore different markets in order to see what I can make a profit from so I purchase small quantity of different items from random sellers to see the quality. I purchased an item from ali not too long ago and it has been stuck in custom for a while now. Few days ago, I received a letter from them saying that the item is counterfeit and they also gave me 5 options. Because the item turned out to be phake, no doubt the best option would be to abandon the package. The letter also have a declared market value of the item so does this mean that they will try to fine me for the same amount? From what I have read from other cases, there might be some penalty depends if the trademark company takes action. Can i please get some advice from those who have dealt with similar situation? This is for U.S custom.

Even with a lawyer involve, i can't get the package back and legal fees is most likely to be 5x the cost of the item, I can use the $$ to pay the fine if there's one in the future... A more direct question would be, should I sign this letter (check the abandon box) and send it back to them? This is not my address and signing this letter is no difference than admitting that I am the receiver.

If your worried about hiring a lawyer just remember...U.S. Customs has your info, the IP by now has your info who can Sue you in court and win. So please re-think the Lawyer advice.
