Exclamation Has Anyone Had This Scam Happen To Them ??

I sold an expensive item on ebay and sent it by recorded delivery. I tracked it a couple of days later and it showed that it had been delivered.

Today i received an email from the buyer saying that they still haven't received it so i resent them the tracking number.

Then about an hour later i received two emails from paypal, one saying that a dispute has been opened and another saying that its been escalated to a claim for the item being significantly not as described.

So i logged into paypal to see what could have been different to what i advertised and to my shock the buyer says i sent him sand, YES SAND!!

I've heard of people getting scammed with things a bit like this but its the first time I've had to deal with it first hand.

Now my paypal account is in negative balance and my only options are to either give him a full refund, ask him to send it back for a full refund, or dispute it and give more evidence.

How would you guys handle this?

I had this scam happen to me and I won it but it took a while and a police report.

The opened a dispute for item not as described, paypal decided to get him to return the item.

He returned a box of shredded paper. I took a video of opening of the box when I collected it as i had a feeling this was going to happen.

I uploaded the video to youtube and sent paypal the links - they never looked at the links and I lost the case.

I then appealed the decision and paypal asked for a police report. i took my video to the police and got the police report.

The case was decided in my favour and I got the funds back.

The knock on effect of this was my account being in a negative balance of $400 which hindered my cash flow at the quietest time of the year for me and I ended up losing two account as I couldn't keep everything going.

here's the tread with the details on:

This is a variation of a theme scam.

Has happened in different forms.

Stealth account or real account?

Thanks for the replies guys.

Its a new stealth account that still has a load of money in it that's being held under the 21 day thing.

So don't i have any way out of this?

Another thing.....

If one of the the other payments that are being held under the 21 days clears while the funds for this claim are being held.

Will the new funds still become available while the dispute is open?

At the moment it has just reduced the balance being helps under the 21 days.

So the reason i ask this is because if I'm going to loose the case anyway then i may as well do the refund before the other money clears (not something i really want to do :-( )

If the original payment is still being held then any refund you agree to would come from the held payment.

Hope things get sorted in your favour.

Make Sure that you can provide to Paypal that:

(1) The EXACT Weight of the amount Product that was Purchased
(2) that the weight & tracking Number of the Package match the product weight
(3) The buyer own E-Mail admitting that they did indeed recieve the product that they ordered
the weight may catch hm out as there will be a big difference

For my expensive items, I have taken photos and kept them on file with date stamp - sometimes I even pack it at the mail office to have some witnessing from postal workers (cool folks). I have included photos of the said item in the package.

The sad part is the scams will continue to happen.

stevebills, I hear your tips but (3) The buyer own E-Mail admitting that they did indeed recieve the product that they ordered is unlikely to occur :(

OP never says he has had such an email from the buyer.

He described more that nothing arrived so the tracking number was resent.

Interesting the short time frame to paypal involvement.

Buyer says I have an issue.
Seller responds quickly.
Buyer escalates even more quickly.
right....
