Hi all,
I was hoping to get some opinions on this.
I have the new Xfinity all in one modem/router that has been mentioned in other posts. As such, I am having the same problem where I am not able to reset the IP address no matter what I try.
I live in the Houston metro area, so I'm assuming a LOT of people have the same IP. Not sure if that's how it works though. When I check IPBurger, it just shows "Comcast, Houston TX"
So anyways, I need to make a new eBay account. I will be changing the following:
new email/username
new user (on my laptop)
new phone #
new SSN
new bank account
new credit card
new address
new name (may be a problem, see below)
I am going to be running the business with my son who is 19. Its his information that we will be using to register. Nothing will be in my name.
I have two concerns. The first is not being able to change IP addresses. I have my old comcast modem which I am able to do it on, but I can't find the power cord. Also, it was VERY slow. Not sure if being in a large city helps mask that or not.
The second concern is that my son has my same last name obviously. He does however have a different physical address as noted above.
I guess what I'm trying to find out from someone who's opinion is a lot more valid than mine is this;
if I change everything listed above, but still have the same IP address, is there a big risk of being "caught" by the eBay police? Actually, as I said, the IP address AND last name will be the same. EVERYTHING else is different.
As always, thanks ahead of time for the help. This site is the best!

You need a new IP.
You have options.
1.)Get a modem and use your own router. Can buy a modem for $40.00 on ebay and I like the $12.00 routers. I buy them in lots and swap them when using comcast. Oftentimes a router will pull the same ip days in a row.
2.) Call Comcast and tell them you need a modem ONLY. They can do this. On the business side this is normal. Then use your own router.
3.) Get a Mifi. kinda sorta unlimitted IPs
4.) tether off your smart phone.
5.) and this is ok IF you are only planning on one account. I have no idea of why you would only want one account but to each there own.
Call comcast and tell them you are having issues and they need to reboot the box. Check IP before and after. Most of the time a comcast reboot will pull a new IP. But you get stuck with that same IP for months and months usually.
Wish ya luck!

You need a different IP. Especially with having the same last name. eBay cannot ban on IP alone, but two accounts on the same IP with the same last name will most likely be linked.
You can get a USB internet stick, or a VPN, or tether from a cell phone. You COULD try calling Comcast, if they reboot the modem from their end, you MIGHT get a new IP. It depends on the model of the modem. It might be worth a try. But then you could never log on to your old eBay or PayPal from the new IP.

Thank you guys. Great advice.
Just a couple more questions when you get a chance.
1. Why would I want more than one account? Just curious. I can barely manage one store. LOL
2. Regarding VPN....is that where you go through another internet site to get re-routed to eBay? Or any other site for that matter I guess. I assume VPN sites charge for this?
Sorry for the ignorance. I tried googling VPN and I'm still not clear on exactly how it works, which service to choose, etc.
Thanks again!

I have an all in one modem from Comcast with my own modem (after that) for years...
I would change IP's in a minute by changing a digit or two inside the modem interface page.
One day the IP stopped changing quickly into an hour sometimes to change if not at all.
I stopped that now I use other things to change IP's. That was weird.

One accounts means one set of selling limits and it means at any time you can be out of business again.
Multiple accounts means diversified risk. Loose one account no big deal. I lost 13 accounts on a Wednesday a few weeks ago. It sucked but you know what, on the following day I shipped a few hundred items. Those 13 accounts was not crippling because I still had many more accounts working for me. It was just a bump in the road.
VPN is Virtual Private Network.
24vc.com is a good source for a quality FRESH and dedicated VPN.

Never mind. Just saw the part you mention youll be using your Son's info.
Bad idea. It si never good idea to use a family member's info. If anything should go wrong you pretty much ensure he will never be able to use his own info on ebay. Ever.

I guess I never read the details.
HORRIBLE idea to use someones info ESPECIALLY an SS.
I mean how is he going to handle the taxes from money he never collected? What happens if a law suit occurs? Or ebay/paypal collections?

Could be that particular model. I have a modem/router combo myself and was gonna call if I had a Static IP because mine never changes. I just bridge and swap routers, probably not the fastest way but it works. I think you need a modem only like @yankee said to change ip manually.
I wouldn't personally go with VPN unless you want to be somewhere else say another state or country.
I wouldn't use anybody's SSN and I took a long hard thought about it.

I believe its best to practice stealth for a while before you get too serious. Especially when considering using your sons info, even if he is completely aware. I wish i knew stealth BEFORE i made an account with my real info. A few practice accounts would have been great. Problem is most people make mistakes without even knowing they're making mistakes and they get banned, everybody that asks me about how to sell on ebay I tried to tell them to practice Stealth before they build an account in their own name. They all look at me like I'm crazy, but more than a handful came to me down the road and said " So how do you do Stealth? I just got suspended ".

More great advice guys. Thanks! I'm wondering though, a lot of you say its a bad idea to use someone else's SSN, but how else could I set up an account? I think eBay and PayPal require a SSN, right?

Don't need the SSN for a long time if ever. They'd love you to give it to them, but nothing will happen if you don't.

The cool thing is that with comcast you can often pull the same IP for weeks and months. Makes logging IPs a lot easier and the account a bot more stable(in theory)

But the reason I asked why swap, is do you find it easier than just changing the mac address? That's what I do. Takes me about 2 minutes total. Even created a little switch box, where I can flick a switch, to power cycle the modem and router.
My next move is to setup a server which will house virtual machines. That way, no issues at all, and I can use it from any computer at any time.

Same IP will link your accounts for sure, it has happened to me, one of my accounts went down because I used same IP on both accounts once 3 months ago. Get a new dongle, don't risk it for a biscuit | |

I'm kind of being lazy and thinking of just going with a VPN service. I have seen a couple of you mention 24vc.com.
Is using a VPN service as safe as going with a different modem/router and changing my IP? Is it more safe to use a VPN service?
Thanks again guys. Don't know what I would do without this site.

Thanks again guys. Don't know what I would do without this site. | Sure is, tons of people use VPN/VPS without any issues! In a sense if used properly can be safer than resetting your modem because it takes some of the human error out of the equation. Can find more details about 24vc and benefits here: http://www.aspkin.com/forums/ebay-ac...-provider.html |
