Yes, other than using your paypal account to buy things like gift cards, etc., bank transfers are the only way that I know of. Some sellers use their paypal account to buy things off of a site they control, basically you would be sending funds to a merchant account. (I have never tried that but it works for some, be careful because of extra fees and the possibility of linking.) Years ago, paypal in Canada allowed you to make transfers to your credit card but they put a stop to that long ago. Then, they issued the mastercard debit card but stopped offering it a few years ago to new account holders. I think Canadian account holders that still have one may be allowed to still use it, don't know since I lost mine when I lost my very old paypal account. Our banking rules here are pretty tough, I think that is why we only have the bank transfers.
Re credit rating etc., we have a social insurance no.(SIN No.) here in Canada. That and birth date is what they usually use for credit checks. As far as I know, paypal is not asking for the SIN no. here at this time.
