But then brokerage firms like Schwab,Ameritrade etc offer free trading ,they use the cash you parked in your brokerage account,they pay you ?? and they lend your money out at a much higher rate.

your article is more recent than mine,mine is 2016 .
We in USA do not have negative interest rate,bank pays us a few pennies each month on my savings account
some offer more-CIT,AMEX,Synchrony,Marcus,Virtual,they are all FDIC insured .
In January,2019 Synchrony 15 months CD paying 2.85% ,I dont know if it is still the same rate
