Re: 1099k mailed to steal address and returned

You are the second person I have read about that had one mailed.

If you log into paypal can you see the tax document on the top left? If so, what do the numbers say? What state is the account in?

Re: 1099k mailed to steal address and returned

I am Vermont one of the state that just changed their law and Massachusetts also. I read the article about it. This is just the state tax that they want to collect if your sale is 600 or higher. But this is a steal account and I don't even have real info or ssn attached. Anyone with the knowlege. Please give me advise

No. I don't see the tax document on the top left

Wonder what the tax ID is on the 1099?

To answer your question, PP will most likely give you a few weeks to update your account info. If you don't they'll limit your account.

Yes, the 1099 sent out can not be ignored.

I got one like that too but PP not in VT or Mass. No alerts in PP, no warnings at all last year either. Plus it's asking to email them that it has been done so they can mail it to the correct address again.

Any tax ID in your case?

Did you ever see the actual 1099?

Nothing no tax id. what do you mean 'see' a 1099. Where is that inside PP?

You go into the reporting center in your PP account then click "tax documents".

I'm just curious how they send a 1099 to the IRS without a tax ID for the seller. Kinda thought that was the whole point of a tax ID, lol.

Re: 1099k mailed to steal address and returned

No documents it says 'none for 2017' in there.

1099-Misc

If you sell certain types of products or are near a threshold metric they will issue those if they wish.

Re: 1099k mailed to steal address and returned

It sounds like they are sending the form BUT not reporting the the IRS much like an interest bearing checking account sends you one in January.

Hercules 04-07-2018 08:36 AM

Re: 1099k mailed to steal address and returned

I went in there last night it had 80 sales and average 50 to 100 bucks for 2017. You know it could be a b*tch if they want it to be. What address can you change it to? Bad news if it sticks or expands.

Gladiator 04-07-2018 08:42 AM

Re: 1099k mailed to steal address and returned

You would need an address like a UPS store box. They have been issuing these for years on folks, nothing new here.

Hercules 04-07-2018 08:44 AM

Re: 1099k mailed to steal address and returned

Email says 'we sent one to you in January but it came back no such person' Why tell me now in stead of then? I Googled the email to send them the new address to and there are no matches at all meaning never discussed out there in my mind.

I have done that in the past and buyers have messaged me back that it was returned....doesn't always work.

Re: 1099k mailed to steal address and returned

how about a PO Box? UPS store, mail boxes etc....

If you open your PO box as a business, you can get pretty much anything in any name. If personal, you can add 4 names to the same PO box.

I guess I will do that. I never liked that because then the outside world can link me for real even though there are deeper 'stealth' ways to get P.O. boxes but I don't like that.

If you aren’t selling illegal goods it shouldn’t matter.

Interesting - explains what happened for a us pp account of mine way back in 2011

yankee 04-07-2018 08:59 AM

Re: 1099k mailed to steal address and returned

To open the PO box, you need a government issued ID and insurance card, registration card, lease etc...

I guess you could easily do this if you have access to real looking spoofed IDs like high school kids often get.

I never felt the need. I have a lot of PO boxes in a few states. All opened with my car registration and drivers license. I sometimes forward one PO box to another to make returns easier. It is only a 6 month or so gig but works for some things.

No need for that. You can easily get a box, even a digital "Traveling" mailbox online for $9. No one but USPS or UPS has your info and no one is going to come for it if you aren't doing something that the feds would care about.

Re: 1099k mailed to steal address and returned

I don't think they mailed it. The address doesn't exist in a way so I think that it's a hint of what's coming. PP is checking addresses for what's coming up next....April 19

Well, seeing as some people have recently lost paypal account because the person who lives at the address, called paypal and reported a stolen identity. You are just one of a few threads about this. You are the ONLY one who has said it came back in the mail and you are the only one who said it is a ⊗⊗⊗⊗ address, so logic says, they mailed it. :)

Didn't you ever have an address of a buyer that was not typed right where USPS didn't like the address before you printed it? I get one or two of those daily.

Gladiator 04-07-2018 09:27 AM

Re: 1099k mailed to steal address and returned

They are auto-generated so it bulk prints regardless of address verification. The 1099's are issued outside of PayPal's main core operations and use a third party, so it's very likely they mailed it.

Just google traveling mailbox, like Go Postal or something. You submit one form and you're done. If it's an account you want to keep it's $9 and you're good to go.

Re: 1099k mailed to steal address and returned

Maybe.. just maybe.. they're mailing out 1099k's with no tax ID on them to sellers registered in VT and MA. Then the seller is supposed to fill in their tax ID when they get it?

Could be due to conflicting state and federal laws. State is requiring a form be sent out but the forms are incomplete since accounts haven't passed the federal threshold?

IDK. :peace:

Possibly. They require the issuance of 1099-MISC forms. All that's done is another 1099-MISC is filed with the SSN/EIN once filled in.

So it's a 1099-MISC these states are sending out and not 1099k's?

Yep. When you don't have the SSN/EIN they issue the MISC form.

So it is issued but NOT reported to any agency?

I'm guessing that's the case, seeing as how the form can't be officially filed with any agency without a tax ID. Our accountant confirmed to me this morning that your tax ID is used for filing purposes and not your name/address.

That is correct. If the address existed or a real name attached to the account, they could possibly audit the person if they got too concerned over missing funds for that party I'd suspect at the state level.

But how would the state know?

I had a big state tax issue in MA. Long story short, they received my 1099K from 2011 from the IRS when I filed a new MA LLC in 2014. If I never filed a MA LLC, MA would have never even known.

If Paypal does not have a tax id and are not reporting to any agency, just creating the form like banks do, I dont see any issues to come up years down the road for any of us who never even know they may or may not have sent one of these.

True, you just never know if they log it by address and eventually could link it but it'd only be in situations where the name/address was fully real. Debt collectors have matched people without SSN's before so you just never know. Either way, if the person isn't a con man and paying their taxes it wouldn't matter whether they kept a log or notice.
