Any thing bettter than cell phone tethering?

I use cell phone tethering to get IPs for ebay accounts...

But it is slow...

IS there better and NOT expensive ways to get different IPs for accounts?

MIFI?

oompaloompa 08-05-2010 06:06 AM

get dial up but I think tethering is quite useful for extra ips, I do it, no slower than dial up IP change

digitalslave 08-05-2010 07:32 AM

I tether with my blackberry and noticed it is quite fast when connecting through my home's wi-fi rather than connecting through the cell tower.

I used to tether with my iphone but I think they blocked it with the latest Firmware update. :(

Would that not just use your home IP? You may want to check that.

If your using your homes wifi, it's much faster than any phone carriers 3G network. But I thought if you used wifi, you'd show the same IP from the Router/Modem. Are you certain this isnt the case?

aspkin 08-05-2010 10:06 AM

Tethering is probably the best and cheapest way to go..

Send would be broadband cards, but it can be pricey.

After that, maybe dialup depending if you have a decent enough connection speed.

etc etc..

You would think that would be the case, but in my case the IP is from my blackberry.:D
I just wish I had tried it sooner!
One other thing, with tethering you can take the laptop anywhere you want as long as you have a cellphone connection.:bounce:

so, blackberry offers the fastest speed ?

T mobile blackberry with unlimited data plan will work ,right?

Using HTC now.

MtnDew 08-05-2010 05:13 PM

as long as your in a good service range of the top 3-4 cell services will work well for you. Yes slower than your home intranetz but oh so much easier. My speed really is not that bad im not uploading a ton of stuff. Just make sure you get one that changes your ip. Some dont.

so lets be specific and have a list of combinations of provider/handsets that do what we need. primarily, it needs to change ip on each tether and be reasonably fast.

can we start with blackberry + tmobile as confirmed working?

Affirmative. Blackberry with tmobile, been using it for 3 months now.
From my experience, the newer blackberrys(curve 8320 and newer) are faster and will upload images quicker than my old 7290 which would not upload the images at all for some odd reason.
I also use a Pear 8220 flip which seems faster than my 8320 when using it with wi-fi.:D

incniu 08-06-2010 09:15 AM

so, any blackberry with data plan works OK?

Any one used Virgin Mobile Broadband2Go before?

Does this offer different IPs?

I use my 8900, my service is with T-Mobile and I also use my homes wi-fi connection to make the speed faster. Even though I am using my homes wi-fi the blackberrys tmobile IP is what shows up. I would highly recommend it, after 3 months Ive never had the same IP.

Im wondering if a Jailbroken Itouch tethering through wifi will do the same thing and still switch the IP. That'd get the job done fastest & it's free

How are you guys tethering blackberry with wi-fi?

Not 3g or phones data, wifi.

Trying to set it up but can not get the PC to use the blackberry via wifi. I have PDAnet if that helps

Cheers

JShearer91 09-11-2010 12:18 AM

I believe the wi-fi boosts the Blackberry's data speeds and it uses the blackberry's internet connection for the IP. Im not 100% sure but when i do not use wi-fi my Blackberry has bad service in my area, but when I enable wi-fi it goes into UMA mode and theres 3 little pink dots where service bars are. Just download the Desktop Software from blackberry website, then after it installs go to use mobile internet and it should connect automatically.

I dont want to use the phones data plan at all :(

Overages are absurd and if I blow over it bill would be in the $100s just for data. I was hoping to disable the phone network while using the wifi. But if that wont work that's a shame.

jbluntz 09-11-2010 12:31 AM

I use blackberry storm with verizon/vzaccess manager and it's just as fast as my wi-fi.

Verizon comes with 5GB per month which is plenty, I manage lot's of accounts and never go over unless I'm downloading videos of coarse but I use my wi-fi for videos.

pod 09-11-2010 12:42 AM

Data plans are stupid here. $70 for 2 gigs [Data ONLY] or something. Not paying that just to avoid dial up

I dont think you guys are actually using the home wifi. I've tried this every which way I could today and without the providers 3g, nothing. I think you just created an illusion for yourselves here somehow....

Best I can tell, and I hope I'm wrong I really do, is you can not use your home wifi > Blackberry > pc

Just simply does not work that way.

Not doable. The PC is using the BB as a modem connected to carrier. Fact that the BB is still connected to home wifi is meaningless. **This is why you get a different IP then the one you are using at home. Because you are not using the home wifi, that's all

Please correct me, I really wanted this to work. But it wont. And the more I dig into it, the more it becomes clear the hardware will not function this way. Again, I think you cats are just seeing what you want to. You are in fact using your data plan, not home wifi :(

The only possibility is that the bandwidth is being shared between the carriers 3g and the wifi. And I don't believe that's possible with the hardware either. But maybe....

If someone with a bigger brain can chime in and prove me wrong I would truly dig that. Pretty sure I just wasted my day trying to turn coal into a diamond ;)

I'm ok with having to use the carriers data plan, sure. But the dream of using the blackberry to tap into home network and get fresh IPs is just a fantasy....
