| newtools | 10-03-2010 12:19 AM | You can go several miles to 20 + miles depending on your application. Wifi or 802.11x is used in commercial applications as well. A good high gain antenna based on Dbi gain will increase your range. I have know people who worked on wireless applications where apartment buildings, office buildings, and even boat docs were setup with multiple high gain antennas and repeaters. I have even know of downtown area with full wifi or blue tooth. With bluetooth they call it: Bluecity
Depending on your needs you can look for a: Yagi antenna which is directional. You have to pint it in a direction you are gain or sending signals too.
Or an omni directional - and grid.
Omini you do not have to point in a certain direction. If you are looking to go over 12 - 15 dbi gain then you may want to make sure you are using shielded mini coaxial cable. Since these high gain antennas are outdoor antennas and the use or a powerful repeater can cause an electrical field. a repeater just extends your range big time.
The wifi decoders that are from china usually have a 6 - 9 dbi gain. to sniff it would give you a 50km to 250km range. you can change the antenna on the decoder using the mini din coaxial cable connect. it looks like a tv cable connection but it's allot smaller. Just buy a high gain antenna with a male to female connection. the higher the gain the longer the range.
cell phones only have a long range because the amount of towers that repeat and relay the signals. wifi works the same way. Purchase 5MileWIFI Gear
there are much much cheaper options i will find more. |
