Ebay Collections Question
 

My question is that I have a paypal account that's in the negative balance now of $1890 due to a scammed buyer abusing the significantly not as described policy on ebay. I can't sell anything anymore and also have ebay fees due of about $250. Can they get collections on me and negatively impact my credit report if i don't pay? I live in the US. This is not a stealth account and they have my REAL Info. It'd be great if I can get a definite answer from some experienced ebayers.

When the buyer won the auction there were some messages back and forth that lead me to believe he had some buyer's remorse. He paid and then I sent the items in the package completely brand new and secure. When it was delivered he complained that half the items were missing which isn't really possible. My paypal account then turns negative. He then sent back the items and ebay refunded the buyer. My paypal account is negative and will stay negative until I reimburse ebay. Buyer's user ID suddenly goes to "no longer registered" status after this incident. Fancy that....

When they sends collections at me will a reply letter demanding proof of debt enough to stop collections from filing negatives on my credit report?

If he is a no longer registered on eBay, then you can definitely fight this case. Try filing for a appeal through PayPal or contact both eBay and Paypal via telephone. Hope all goes well for you!

Yes, it will. And they will keep calling you at least 3x a day looking for their money. If the items you sold were "legal" goods, try finding a lawyer and ask for advice, $1800+ is a big loss!

Thanks for your input. This is interesting..I've been searching for some past posts on this forum from experienced members claiming that they've NEVER seen ebay hit a person's credit report as long as you respond to their mail with a letter requesting proof of debt.

Apparently in order to hit a credit report they need proof of debt for a service provided. Since they were the ones that decided and refunded the buyer, they have no right to come after me for the money because no service was provided.

Can anyone confirm this?

If you registered you real details with eb ay and pa yp al, you can fully expect a negative balance to go to collections and, YES, credit rating will be hit. When you open an account with these companies, you are tacitly signing a contract of service with them to sale and pay commisions+listing fees. You might win in court but the lawyers and fees involved are tremendous as well. Not to mention time wasted - and even then you may fail.
