| | | KingRay | 06-15-2011 09:50 PM | What kind of markups are out there??? The title pretty much says it all.
I am just curious as to what all people on here are getting for markups?
Myself, I currently dont list it unless I can make 5 times what I pay for it. If I spend $10 and dont sell it for atleast $50 I am pissed.
I see these people talking about $1 items and thing what a waste of time. is this normal??
again, Just curious. Not asking what you sell, just what types of profit margin people are getting. Kinda odd nosy question I guess. |
| ensignia | 06-15-2011 11:44 PM | I usually try and aim for £70 profit before fees on the items I list. These are quite expensive items I tend to sell though. |
| KingRay | 06-16-2011 01:15 AM | Thats pretty good. I have a few things that I normally pay anywhere from $10-$70 on and have made no less that $400ea. Those are fun ones. it just sucks when competitors throw listings out there selling them in bulk to just make a few bucks fast.
If they only slowed down and listed them differently they could increase their sales 5 fold atleast. some people are just dumbasses though. |
| unkown5454 | 06-16-2011 03:13 AM | I do the same thing King. I have to honestly if I want to make any kind of living and pay bills. If I can't do 300% or higher, I won't sell it. Now, outside of eB ay, I will do lower because I don't get completely raped with 12-15% fees. |
Wish I could clear 5x - need something new for sure because my well is dry. |
| FandangoKango | 06-16-2011 03:48 PM | I wish i could make the dough you guys are making! |

That means I have to make gross way.
There are so many places to make that kind of markup its ridiculous. Most of the time you can get markups like that just by creatively listing your items.
take a box lot of sockets or something similar for instance. you pay $400 for a butt load of them in mixed oddball sets. You buy a few more lots over the next few days or weeks and you start to get full sets that way. Then you start researching how to sell the sets in sets or individuals, or other.
The guys that sold the lots gave it away, then you will make the big money by being patient and adding to it and splitting them up where they make more sense money wise to do so.
There are so many people doing this now its not feasible for sockets but that is a good example of how I got started.
You have to be VERY creative on how you list. That is how I pretty much make my competitors look like morons. I can buy from them and double what they made on it. I have a full 40x40 garage though full of crap but when it gets full you can start getting creative.
There is more to it but that is kinda what I think is the best way to sell. |
| Gamefreak | 06-17-2011 01:53 AM | Your markups and profit margins are high! Mine is a mere 20% at most. I can sell anywhere from 4-15 items a day per account an I currently have 2 accounts working on a third. |
| Littlemorestealth | 06-17-2011 03:33 AM | Do you have to clear 6k a month profit or revenue? |
My rule of thumb is at least 100% markup. Ebay and Amazon at least 115% markup.
I've had items that I've marked up 800%, it all depends, but I wouldn't bother if it wasn't at least 100% markup. Isn't worth the hassle for me, I do it part-time. |

| GreenBean | 06-18-2011 07:22 PM | On goodies I make myself, mark-up is 3000% :cheer: |
| newjerseymax | 06-19-2011 01:05 AM | I run mostly auction style listings so the market decides my markup or my cost also has a lot to do with it. Inadequate buying will reduce the mark up potential. |
| yellow0102 | 06-19-2011 11:21 PM | WOW, the best i do is 40-70%
Wish i knew what to sell ;) |

Selling $5 items for $8 would be a waste of everyones time if you ask me. How do you do it? For just some extra cash or for a living? just curious. |
| GreenBean | 06-20-2011 08:21 PM | Now you are being NOSEY already. |

Been kicked off many times due to being lazy but learned, straightened up and been running smooth for a while now.
If you like and know about what you sell you can make a killing. Selling ipod / iphone cases is boring. seems everyone wants to sell those and make $2 in profit.. lol..(sorry guys but really...)
PM me, I have an idea for you. |
| yellow0102 | 06-21-2011 12:28 AM | I sent you a PM :) |
| Littlemorestealth | 06-21-2011 07:01 AM | I think the most I make per item is between £15-£20. The initial listing and research is the most time consuming but once the listings are up and running your making that sort of money just for going to the post office.
If I make £200 a week I'm a happy man. |
I lose my markups because of horrible shipping rates conceded by ama zon at times. |

I know this is said all the time but someone big needs to start another auction site that will compete with ebay by way of number of hits per day. The only thing close is probably CL. But ebay from what I hear owns 40% of it.
I can see them doing an auction site pretty easily and not have to worry about site traffic. They already have a hell of a base. |

I use it all the time | I see those other auction sites that have what they show is about a 1/4 of what ebay shows and I do a search, nothing comes up in any thing close to what I sell. Plus if you look at sellers feedback ratings, most of the last 10 sales are about a full year for the 10 sales or so. Until something changes drastically, ebay is the way. |
| Littlemorestealth | 06-23-2011 06:48 AM | At the end of the day, when people want cheap stuff they go on eBay. If they wanted to pay money they would go to a shop.
I can't really see them being able to change that image. |
Also you can not really get over the idea of INSTANT GRATIFICATION (ha).
Lot of people will pay full price at shops because they get their items instantly without worrying about mail. Also, they can inspected the item first hand and touch/feel - that's a huge component of Buying Theory. |
| oompaloompa | 06-24-2011 03:05 PM | I try to at least double my money...... |

Google is NOT nice to deal with should the user be in the wrong.
There is a zero tolerance program with them:doh: |

It is a lot of work for sure, but when the sales on those other sites being to rival your sales on eB ay, that is one hell of a good feeling partner. No listing fees (most of the time), no cases being opened, no holds on cash, NO PROBLEMS... |
