| | | Sandy D | 02-02-2012 11:56 PM | Told you guys to check out your local thrift stores! I just scored a Seth Thomas clock for 29.99 at a local dive thrift store.
Last one like it sold for 650.00 according to terapeak. Also picked up tons of smalls for new accounts.
If you have a local thrift store and drive by it you need to stop.
Also picked up a Callaway Big Bertha gold club for 3.00.
Sorry for the typo in the headline. |
| biggunn | 02-03-2012 12:19 AM | Very nice! There are thrift stores every few miles in some cities. |
| Sandy D | 02-03-2012 12:38 AM | They are everywhere around me in any direction I go.
I go to many antique auctions and always leave in time to hit the thrift stores on the way. |

Dang you must be making a killing because I find something every single time I go and that is a lot and no way do I find enough stuff to buy a new home.
Unless you are meaning you are making your payments with what you find and that would be rather easy.
I posted about this a while back and someone said you could not make any money doing this so I posted this thread showing people here they can make some great money doing this.
I have done it for a long time myself but never see anyone post about it.
Something for members to think about.
One of the local thrift stores here had several boxes of wiring for next to nothing. Mixed sizes etc. Inside--- copper wire. Nice scrap yard item when you go. More then 50 pounds of wiring. |
| doughboykilla | 02-03-2012 01:48 AM | are local therft stores are a joke now prices there higher then new. We got a savers store here it staterd out all good now there prices is higher then new. They have these 10 pc mico screwdrive sets there priced $5.99 made by tuff built and u can go across the street and get the same set at dollar tree for $1  they got dumb*ss's marking prices on that junk. Even though my friends wife was trying on some boots there and felt something in it and reached in and pull a stack of 100's out totaling in $1000 which they kept :D |

| Sandy D | 02-03-2012 02:06 AM | Amazing knowing many post on having problems finding good cheap items to build feedback.
My stores are full of everything, many have piles of stuff they cannot even get to in a day.
One Salvation Army brings carts out all day long of items.
Electronics is a great seller. Used good electronics always fetch good money.
I did see a group of Game Cubes today for 5.99 each with controllers and should have bought them all. Marked as is turned me off of them. Might grab them next trip and hope they work.
I posted in your other thread about my finds.
Guess we are the only ones who do this.
I can see you are like me and enjoy doing this. |
| GreenBean | 02-03-2012 02:06 AM | Great ways to get bargains.
In OZ, it does tend (at times) to be a neighborhood thing as to the bargains obtainable.
More dealers are trying to 'fleece' the better goodies but if you are quick you can get rewards. :juggle: |
I do this as well before last year before all the storage wars "shows" I bought 2 units 1
had a 1975 Harley motorcycle and a 1968 TR250 and tons of vintage items newest items
in there was from 1980 I sold the bike on CL for $800 no title didn't run and the 1968
Triumph TR250 $5K on ebay and the vintage items were like old toy racing cars from the
1960's made about $12k and bought the unit for $55 the 2nd unit I bought had a big
wooden crate won it for $80 turned out to be a truck tire changer brand new sold on
ebay for $4500 had to ship it for free and rent a forklift after all the tv shows all the
newbies run up the prices I still go but never will hit the jackpot like that again :(
I still go to garage sales thift stores and auctions but seems like a lot of people already
research it because it's gone when I get there |

I went this morning and picked up some items including taking the chance on one of the consoles. Brought it home, put in a game and it worked like a charm.
This store marks everything as is because they do not want any returns on anything. Clothing is the only items that do not have the as-is sticker.
All the furniture, electronics, nick knacks, etc are marked as is. I also noticed a huge sign above the door going out today "Everything sold as-is, no returns accepted".
I am actually headed back out to buy the other consoles. I can hit a couple of the smaller stores on the way back and see if anything new got put out.
Dang this is so much fun. Now please do not laugh at me. A while back I bought a box of high grade construction type bathroom caulking for 2.00. Eighteen tubes were in the box.
I put them on ebay for 0.99 for 7 days. They ended at 42.50 and they paid the shipping. 40.50 profit minus the fees on a box of caulking!
Just to give our members an idea on picking of things you normally would never even look at. |
| KingRay | 02-04-2012 07:10 PM | I dont even bother going to goodwill or big chain places like that because they send all their crap to a larger facility to be marked and looked at.
Goodwill has many many experts in their big sorting facilities that look at every item in their field. Example. A shoe and clothing expert area in the facility may have 10 emplloyees that their only job is to look at each tag and sort into price categories. the highest categories go on the good will website for auction.
The rest goes out to be distributed to stores.
They actually have very knowledgeable people grabbing all the expensive goods that they can find in each category.
Of course some of it slips through and makes it to the stores but not near as much as gets caught.
The smaller local ones sell what comes in to their store so those you have a much better chance of a great find that you can cash in on. |
| LoopHole | 02-04-2012 08:45 PM | The local thrift stores around me also don't really have anything special either. I've checked out a couple of them and the owners seem to know what they are doing with their items.
Garage sales are a different story. You can get really lucky sometimes. |
| jamcocktail21 | 02-04-2012 10:13 PM | I've been yesterday to thrift stores,i bought Nikon Micro-Nikkor 55 mm(4$)...Listed on ebay
one day action and what do you think??120$
You right Sandy it's a great store |
| GreenBean | 02-04-2012 10:36 PM | Must be Sandy's thought waves.
Spoke to UK associate. He picked up x3 pieces of matching Hornsea crockery for £3. Right time to list & they will go for over £150 each. Nice :D |
| Sandy D | 02-04-2012 11:21 PM | Glad I went back to grab the games, I found a blackberry with charger in the show case for 19.99.
I am sorry to disagree with King Ray on this. I find tons of items at my local goodwills and salvation army stores.
Fact is, I have large goodwills in every direction from my home and all of them have some great stuff 90% of the time.
The rare clock I found at one of these places.
If people were hired to check items no way would a nice blackberry get through and marked for 19.99.
I hit the yard sales as well. I have a ton of those around me year around.
I also have two of the largest flea markets in the US within an hour drive of me so I have to hit them all the time as well. |

You right Sandy it's a great store | AWESOME!!!
Good job.
You wont find something like this everyday but I can spend 15.00 on gas and hit a huge goodwill and a huge salvation army along with 5-6 local thrift stores and do it in a couple hours and always come home with several nice profit items.
Going back tonight and getting the blackberry was proof enough for me that you not only have to be lucky but you have to have the knowledge of many varieties of items.
If you guys do not mind I am going to list some of my finds as I go on so the subscribers here can benefit and when you hit the thrift stores, yard sales etc you can start looking for these types of items.
Items in the recent past I made some crazy money on.
Ping club club set with bag. 29.99 sold for 242.50.
Waltons lunch box 10.00 sold for 65.00
1970's Kiss tour t-shirt 1.99 sold for 67.51
Wayne Gretzky jersey 1.99 sold for 55.00
TGMT above has a vast knowledge of electronics which I do not have, but I can sort my way through it so always look at everything looking for items that are usable, antique, collectible etc.
* And I always have my phone with me to terapeak everything before I buy it. |
| jamcocktail21 | 02-04-2012 11:41 PM | Great Job Sandy |

No no. not that stuff. Thats minor compared to what comes in. Purple label ralph lauren dresses for $3k. donated.
Cayman gator/Croc boots that they would sell for $20 in a thrift store. SEll online at Goodwill for $1600.00, Donated
Certain golf shoes, upwards of $600.00 Donated
Stuff like that is what I am talking about. There is some stuff but the larger ones like goodwill have specialists. Its well known, they hire all the time for those jobs.
Its just to maximize their profit so they can use it for what they use it for.
It would really be stupid to put this stuff in a store and put $20 on them. |

Ask them a question and they look at you like "what in the hell are you asking".
I asked once if the items come in are priced here or at the distribution centers and she told me that this stores item all get priced by a specialist in the backroom. But told me some larger goodwills move so much stuff they have items priced before they get to the store.
LOL "Specialist".
I have passed my idea onto a nephew of mine in another state and he said his local goodwill had to take out the seats at the front because people were hanging out all day and taking naps waiting for more items to come out.
He send a text a few days ago that he found a new in box American Flyer train set for 10.00. How in the heck did someone miss that one is beyond me as most adults know trains and American Flyer. |
| newjerseymax | 02-05-2012 12:03 PM | Too many people already doing the same thing here. We have tons of people driving around at night befeore trash day too. Its almost a given that anything half decent in the trash or stuff that can be scrapped is gone real fast.
It all started around 2006 ish when everyone was down around here...
Great though if in an area that not too much competition.. |
| Thankful | 02-05-2012 12:06 PM | Good job Sandy!! wish we had some in the UK! LOL |
| doughboykilla | 02-05-2012 12:43 PM | I think it all depends on where u live to get the good deals. here the goodwill and Salvation Army is junk they have junk here that was once good then was trashed then was found and then was donated  They should call it the 3rd time around store.
Are local dump gets all kinda goodys my firends dad got all kinda stuff there and they fianly stoped letting people go there and told him they was opening a dump resell store  I dont see how that would be sanitary but thats what they told him but i think it was just a excuses to make him leave. A good name for such a store would be Trashly Treasure's |
| Sandy D | 02-06-2012 01:23 AM | Looking on craiglist last night I just scored a major purchase today.
I found something on CL and used terapeak to see what it was going for.
I about fell of the chair.
I could not wait until 9 am to call the seller.
Called and told him I was interested, got his address, went to the GPS and on my way I went.
When I got there this person had two of these scores. He said he wanted to list them one at a time. I asked if he would sell me them both and he said sure it will save me the hassle of selling the second one.
He sold me these items for 50.00 bucks for the pair.
The last one sold on ebay for 1150.00.
I listed one tonight on ebay starting at 0.99 and it has already hit 300.00 with 26 bids. Once the Super Bowl was over this thing went up quick.
So another way to find items looking on CL, using terapeak to research them and make some money.
Those of you who know phones need to be doing this as I seen an add put up tonight for an iphone 3 32gb for 275.00 with accessories. I see they sell anywhere from 400.00 to 700.00. I do not know phones but know this would be a good re sell item for ebay. I will call them in the morning for sure. |

How in the heck did someone miss that one is beyond me as most adults know trains and American Flyer. | Still dont mean those people. Goodwill and a few others have a VERY large warehouses like huge walmart stores that trucks deliver to all day and night. The trucks come from other stores and donation boxes.
The store employees are just low paid employees. Nothing special.
The large facilities is what I mean. They showcased a similar site on the show called. "Drescue me"
I think thats what it was called. That lady goes there and buys dresses in bulk. |
| KingRay | 02-06-2012 01:34 AM | We have stores here that when you see something really good and ask about it. THey say its not for sale. How is that?
I am big into MMA and saw a huge banner on the wall for a past event. I asked about it and they said "not for sale". that has happened 3 times in the last year now when I find something I know I can make a killing on. |

They even had to pass a new law on stealing man hole covers as the scrapper were taken them right off the road and taking them to the scrap yard.
I love box lots at auctions. Always a surprise in them.
Agreed. Luck is almost everything in this game. |
| Artann | 02-08-2012 12:37 AM | I have one question though. How much inventory are you carrying??? And I wonder how you car and house looks with all that stuff:) I think that it has to be noticeable?:) |
You can stuff it into a garage. |

Inventory turns over fast. I do not keep items for long as I turn them over as fast as I can and move onto new items.
I do not have an item long enough to collect dust.
I dont have a car, it would be useless to own one.
We have a family van which I used lidded totes to put things in and wont put anything that needs cleaning in it. We have a large cargo van for all the larger items and to go to auctions, estate sales, yard sales storage sales etc.
Noticeable to who? No one goes into my garage if that is what you mean? When I have the garage door up which is pretty much year around and a neighbor appears to be nosy I just close it.
I am a well oiled organizer and wont allow items to clutter up my home.
And I have a 20x30 storage shed for those items I do not want to bring home such as small appliances, chain saws, furniture I re sell on CL etc. |

Amen to that for various reasons... |
| Sandy D | 02-08-2012 01:14 PM | My finds of the day.

Budweiser Wall Clock 4.99
4 gallons of unopened Sherwin Williams white exterior paint 1.00 a gallon.
Post your finds, this could be very interesting to see what you have found when you are out and about. |
| Artann | 02-08-2012 01:18 PM | I second tha ^ :amen:
I mean noticeable for the ones that live there including yourself. I've been to a house once and could totally tell that they were into thrift store business. I guess as long as you don't let it into your house and keep it in the garage it might work.
But I still would LOVE to have the garage for cars))) especially in winter! the feel of a warm car is priceless. |
