Question about iphone thethering IP

Hi guys,

I use iphone tethering (hotspot) quite often for stealth. Since the 1st of June the IP addresses have been very limited in variation. At best maybe 10 different IP. Otherwise I am getting constant duplicates... Usually only the last 2 numbers change in the rage between 20-30...

This is first time ever I had such issue with my iphone (At&t)... I expected the range to change after couple of days, however now I am on verge of having to get a new device just to manage.

Anyone had this issue before?
Any suggestions?

Sandy D 06-04-2012 08:46 PM

Yes I had the same issue for a long time until I moved and now get to use the MAC address changing.

Life is easier.

If I had not moved I would have went with dial up even though it would be slower.

newjerseymax 06-04-2012 10:55 PM

You had the same issue with iphone? Coming from towers I would imagine constant changing of IP. Every other person has iphone with at&t... So I am sharing IP with all these people? Either I should worry that everyone is sharing IP's anyway or worry that I am one of few actually paying for hotspot tethering.

I was wondering if I drive to different tower would it then change? I simply do not know enough about the technology.

That's the main reason I still have my blackberry on top of iphone through verizon since you get a whole new range ip each time with blackberry but with iphone it's only the last few digits that change, that's with verizon.

T-Mobiles $30 walmart plan with 5gig of 4g Data works very well with a android phone that either comes stock with tether or can be rooted. New IP range each time.

Sandy D 06-05-2012 01:09 AM

Max I am in the same boat, not much of a techie either.

I thought it was like 49.99 a month?

cmbhuy 06-05-2012 02:18 AM

Walmart has a special plan for $30 you only get 100 voice minutes but you can unlimited text and 5gb of data

This is important. Stop this if you can.

Also, for those of you recommending T-Mob 4G, be careful. When on 4G, their IPs hardly change. This has been brought up before.

My best experience with super wide ranges is Sprint. I will soon be testing the new Verizon prepaid 4G LTE MiFi box and since it switches back and forth between LTE and 3G, that is a good sign the IP range should be pretty broad.

This is happening to me as well, my iphone ip address is often duplicates and off by just one digit. I hope it goes back to how it was before.

I am quite sure it has nothing to do with the phone itself, but how many IPs the carrier allocates to each tower/subscriber.

erikgriba 06-05-2012 11:13 AM

I'm having the same issue now, what is the best alternative ??

GrannyT 06-05-2012 11:15 AM

I am always in awe of the technical knowledge on this forum

I have both phones on the same account through the same provider, like i said I get a complete different range of ip's on the blackberry, on the iphone only the last few digits change.

roberteng 06-05-2012 11:52 AM

Didnt know that, only read the book saying its good for iphone as it is much more easy then setting the MAC add.

I may just take that advice and grab a blackberry today. Thanks

newjerseymax 06-06-2012 10:29 AM

It was great up til first of the month. I have read before that 4g has limited IP range. Maybe some kind of switch happened. My phone always showed 4g before, however never quite had that 4g speed. hmmmm...

Is that walmart plan a pre-paid plan? I dont want to go into anymore contracts... arghhhh

erikgriba 06-06-2012 11:16 AM

I got this one from T-mobile yesterday and it works great :-)

Unsupported Browser

newjerseymax 06-08-2012 07:50 PM

Ok this is driving me crazy.... Now its literally switching between 5 IP....

Strange thing is when I check ipburger on the phone bowser its a totally new different fresh IP...

Been trying to wrap my head around it for last few hours. I have labels to print and clock is ticking....

oge 06-08-2012 08:33 PM

Scared the crap out of me must be your area I just checked my ipmanger app log and they been changing and just toggled about 30 times in a row not one repeat.

You can always try to toggle the 3G to off on the iPhone gives you new ip on Edge might be slower but hey it's a new ip!

Toggled off 3G and when on EDGE it still gives one of the same ip's :(

oge 06-08-2012 10:26 PM

So on Edge you hit airplane mode and still same ip?

Silly question, but how do you switch to "edge"... I have been reading and googling for hours trying everything....

unkown5454 06-08-2012 10:39 PM

General settings > network > turn off that 3G hoopla ;)

I personally think something else is wrong. You should not be just cycling 5 IPs total. Try just completely turning your phone off for some time. Not instantly back on.

newjerseymax 06-09-2012 01:10 AM

No such switch on 4GS.... Been reading Howards Forums and some other forums and apparently the option was removed in later phones with newer chips...

Guess ill be looking into one of those flashed mifi units they get going with boost mobile. Some seller even guarantee 1 year of free data... Not sure now...

Yes the walmart plan is no contract. You just buy the Sim and the Plan you have to provide your own phone.
i like this tethering option because all you have to do is tick your data off and back on takes about 1-5seconds and you have a new ip address.

If you dont mind me asking... Which phone do you use? I know tethering does not work with all phones. Been trying to get my LG Thrill to work with it... No luck!

Oh, my bad. Have had every iPhone but 4S. Anyways, I personally import cheap Android phones with at least Froyo OS 2.2 or higher and put my SIM in to utilize the free tethering. Can be had for around $150 brand new on EB or cell phone resellers. Huawei and Samsung have some great, extremely cheap Android phones.

Yeah, i have the option on my iphone 4s to change to EDGE from sbsettings a jailbreak app, i even did airplane mode on and off on edge a few times, still nothing :(

cmbhuy 06-09-2012 01:58 PM

I use the Galaxy S II and HTC One S,
@newjerseymax
the thrill is a AT&T phone, you will need to root the phone and possibly have to put on a different rom to utilize the tethering. AT&T does not offer free tethering like t-mobile. But try to root the phone and download the wifitether apk from google or barnacle wifi tether from the app store.

unkown5454 06-09-2012 07:40 PM

^^^ One S...nice pick. Best phone T-Mob has ever had until that GSIII hits!

jamcocktail21 06-10-2012 11:59 AM

For me T-mobile does not work as i thought, gonna try verizon:)

newjerseymax 06-10-2012 02:46 PM

I looked at those phones and yes they are great, but just too much for my purpose. I simply need an android phone that will allow tether...

So basically I can buy a Chinese android phone 2.2 or higher
Go to walmart and they have a $30 a month plan with Data.
Then download tether app and im good to go? Does that sound about right?

Is the walmart plan t-mobile?

Nissan2nr22 06-10-2012 03:06 PM

I'm thinking about buying the MiFi 2200 with sprint's data plan. But i'm not sure as to if sprint gives a different range of ip's every time. Does anyone have an experience with this?

newjerseymax 06-10-2012 09:55 PM

I was looking at those mifi too... But dang one of my primary reasons for switching from android to apple was because tether was flawless and I made sure to proper pay for tethering and all. Now id hate to buy a mifi... Im thinking of selling the iphone and buying android phone instead. I might even come out ahead....

madmuppet303 06-10-2012 11:31 PM

Easy Tether on Android works very well.

WalMart service is T-Mob. Second, an imported phone with Froyo OS 2.2 can already tether. It's a basic feature in Android and only disabled by dumb*ss carriers here in the USA.

I imported a nice little unlocked Samsung with OS 2.2, went to WiFi settings and BAM...FREE TETHERING.

This has been talked about a ton. I have had Virgin Mobile and Sprint cards, all have massive IP ranges. They are my favorite so far ;).

Going to test the new Verizon prepaid mifi box next week!

yotano211 06-11-2012 03:42 AM

yea Virgin Mobile has tons of IP address ranges. My IP ranges bounces all around the West coast, sometimes even to TX.

Cheapest plan is $35 with 300 min and everything else unlimited. You might even find a smartphone on ebay with the old data plan rates of $25/month/w unlimited data. Kinda hard to find but I have seen them.

Do you have one line and swap SIM cards or do you have 2 lines? Also, do you mind telling me which blackberry you use. I might go this route if I can just swap SIM cards...
