| | | Sooner | 07-01-2012 07:55 PM | iPhone 4 tether vs. T-Mobile Rocket 4G I have an iPhone 4 with service provided by AT&T. I currently have 200 mb data for $15.00/month and can change to 3GB for $30.00 total per month. I did a jailbreak on my iPhone and can tether which is somewhat slow but workable.
Questions:
1. Will AT&T be able to detect that I'm tethering without paying their tethering fee? If so, what will happen if they discover this?
2. Which is better ~ iPhone 4 jail broken with 3GB data for $30.00/month, T-Mobile Rocket 3GB month or some other device/service (Sprint, Verizon, etc.)? My iPhone contract expires at the end of November and I can change providers at that time, if needed.
Information: T-Mobile will charge $39.99 plus tax/month for the Rocket with 2 GB/month plus a $35.00 activation fee.
Thanks!

I have an Iphone 3G (8gb) with unlimited data but to be honest, I like using my T-Mobile Rocket 4G ($30 for 1.5gb). Some say the T-Mobile service is not reliable but I feel that it depends where you live. I personally have zero issues with both so it's hard for me to put down any service. |
| unkown5454 | 07-01-2012 08:57 PM | Depending on signal strength, T-Mobile will pull down faster speeds. iPhone runs on AT&T's slower network. |
| Nissan2nr22 | 07-02-2012 12:05 AM | I tether my iphone 4s with the AT&T unlimited plan, it runs fast, everything loads immediately.
The only problem now is that as of June 1st, AT&T's ip address changed and only cycles through about 10-20 of the same ip's over and over again.
I'm thinking about going with a verizon mifi card, since i've heard verizon you get a vast amount of ip's |
| Sooner | 07-02-2012 10:30 AM | Thanks everyone for your input. I am concerned about AT&T's change and now limiting the number of available ip addresses.
One more question ~ I have a Mac Mini desktop computer so if I do switch and use a mifi which is better:
a hotspot like this ~ Set Your Location
or Unsupported Browser
The Verizon Jetpack has better reviews than the Rocket.
We currently have AT&T U-Verse for our TV and internet and I love the speed but we have a static IP address even after unplugging overnight (or for several days when we've been out of town). Before U-Verse we tried Clear and it absolutely SUCKED ~ does not have a dynamic IP address, constantly had a weak signal and/or dropped the signal and we live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. |
| xdirc | 07-02-2012 10:44 AM | I use my iPhone 3G, 2GB monthly limit. Jail broken to tether using a cracked TETHERME app. Been using for 6 months and haven't got detected. I do get close to exceeding my monthly limit though. |
| unkown5454 | 07-02-2012 08:45 PM | Sprint and Verizon 4G MiFi boxes are the top contenders right now with the widest IP ranges and fastest download speeds.
You can try the scenario with your phone and see how that suits you since MiFi will cost just a bit more. But, in my opinion, I will stand by the simplicity of MiFi boxes and the massive IP ranges most of them have given me. |
As of Today I have stopped using my Iphone, I am now full on with T-Mobile Rocket 4G. Nice spread of IP's. |

All i'm hearing about t-mobile is that the range of ip's isn't that great.
Have you been getting a new ip every time? Have you tried at least 50 times all with new ip's?
Thanks |
@Nissan2nr22, I get a different IP every single time, I have gone through 125 IP's non-repeating. |
| download3000 | 07-05-2012 12:34 AM | If you tether your phone with t mobile you will get a small amount of ips and alot of repeats with the 4g adapter its ALOT less likely to get a repeat but also possible. |

| unkown5454 | 07-06-2012 01:50 AM | ^^^ Because you are hopping on to different cell towers. |
| Nissan2nr22 | 07-06-2012 11:57 AM | iPhone on at&t works pretty decent again! Started first week in july, ip addresses started to change and give me unique ones again. So far so good, i'll report back after trying it a bunch of times |
| biggunn | 07-06-2012 11:16 PM | I've heard good things about iphone tethering. I have used t-mobile tethering in the past. Both work very well. |
| MtnDew | 07-06-2012 11:22 PM | good info here guys thanks!!! i use sprint as a backup but use home internet mainly |
| totallylegit | 07-08-2012 01:52 PM | I use my phone for tethering with Tmobile and I get about 10-15 different ips , a lot of repeats, plus Tmobile is awfully slow in my area. Maybe its time to switch and get a mifi.. |

Sometimes 4 to 6 times though. |
| Nissan2nr22 | 07-10-2012 03:25 PM | Update, iphone on AT&T went back to being a piece of sh!t |
| Sooner | 07-15-2012 10:47 AM | I have changed my AT&T data plan to 3GB ($30.00/month) from 200MG ($15.00/month). I truly hope I don't run into the same problem as Nissan and have a variety of iIP addresses. I'll report back later re: IP addresses range. |

Doesn't matter where I go, I'm 30 miles away from home and it's giving me the same set of ip's | | All times are GMT -5. The time now is 11:21 AM. | |
