iPhone 4 tether vs. T-Mobile Rocket 4G

I have an iPhone 4 with service provided by AT&T. I currently have 200 mb data for $15.00/month and can change to 3GB for $30.00 total per month. I did a jailbreak on my iPhone and can tether which is somewhat slow but workable.

Questions:

1. Will AT&T be able to detect that I'm tethering without paying their tethering fee? If so, what will happen if they discover this?

2. Which is better ~ iPhone 4 jail broken with 3GB data for $30.00/month, T-Mobile Rocket 3GB month or some other device/service (Sprint, Verizon, etc.)? My iPhone contract expires at the end of November and I can change providers at that time, if needed.

Information: T-Mobile will charge $39.99 plus tax/month for the Rocket with 2 GB/month plus a $35.00 activation fee.

Thanks!

Gina

I have an Iphone 3G (8gb) with unlimited data but to be honest, I like using my T-Mobile Rocket 4G ($30 for 1.5gb). Some say the T-Mobile service is not reliable but I feel that it depends where you live. I personally have zero issues with both so it's hard for me to put down any service.

Depending on signal strength, T-Mobile will pull down faster speeds. iPhone runs on AT&T's slower network.

I tether my iphone 4s with the AT&T unlimited plan, it runs fast, everything loads immediately.

The only problem now is that as of June 1st, AT&T's ip address changed and only cycles through about 10-20 of the same ip's over and over again.

I'm thinking about going with a verizon mifi card, since i've heard verizon you get a vast amount of ip's

Thanks everyone for your input. I am concerned about AT&T's change and now limiting the number of available ip addresses.

One more question ~ I have a Mac Mini desktop computer so if I do switch and use a mifi which is better:

a hotspot like this ~ Set Your Location

or

Unsupported Browser

The Verizon Jetpack has better reviews than the Rocket.

We currently have AT&T U-Verse for our TV and internet and I love the speed but we have a static IP address even after unplugging overnight (or for several days when we've been out of town). Before U-Verse we tried Clear and it absolutely SUCKED ~ does not have a dynamic IP address, constantly had a weak signal and/or dropped the signal and we live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

I use my iPhone 3G, 2GB monthly limit. Jail broken to tether using a cracked TETHERME app. Been using for 6 months and haven't got detected. I do get close to exceeding my monthly limit though.

Sprint and Verizon 4G MiFi boxes are the top contenders right now with the widest IP ranges and fastest download speeds.

You can try the scenario with your phone and see how that suits you since MiFi will cost just a bit more. But, in my opinion, I will stand by the simplicity of MiFi boxes and the massive IP ranges most of them have given me.

As of Today I have stopped using my Iphone, I am now full on with T-Mobile Rocket 4G. Nice spread of IP's.

All i'm hearing about t-mobile is that the range of ip's isn't that great.

Have you been getting a new ip every time? Have you tried at least 50 times all with new ip's?

Thanks

MM78 07-04-2012 09:43 PM

@Nissan2nr22, I get a different IP every single time, I have gone through 125 IP's non-repeating.

download3000 07-05-2012 12:34 AM

If you tether your phone with t mobile you will get a small amount of ips and alot of repeats with the 4g adapter its ALOT less likely to get a repeat but also possible.

Looks decent.

I traveled across few states and the IP does change to another range of 20 or so in different states via iphone... Weird....

^^^ Because you are hopping on to different cell towers.

iPhone on at&t works pretty decent again! Started first week in july, ip addresses started to change and give me unique ones again. So far so good, i'll report back after trying it a bunch of times

I've heard good things about iphone tethering. I have used t-mobile tethering in the past. Both work very well.

I use my phone for tethering with Tmobile and I get about 10-15 different ips , a lot of repeats, plus Tmobile is awfully slow in my area. Maybe its time to switch and get a mifi..

T-mobile does a lot of repeats for me too after I get a few uniques. I always get a unique eventually though with turning airplane mode on and off. Sometimes 4 to 6 times though.

Update, iphone on AT&T went back to being a piece of sh!t

Sooner 07-15-2012 10:47 AM

I have changed my AT&T data plan to 3GB ($30.00/month) from 200MG ($15.00/month). I truly hope I don't run into the same problem as Nissan and have a variety of iIP addresses. I'll report back later re: IP addresses range.

Still having ip address problems with at&t. Doesn't matter where I go, I'm 30 miles away from home and it's giving me the same set of ip's

Nissan I did travel last week about 1300 miles away from home and I did get a different range of IP's when I got there. Not sure how far you gotta go...

When I got back I was sad to see the same set of ip...

You get 20 of them.... i caught it early enough to write down ips that I would use for 4 accounts. Each I assigned 5. If you dont get right one then re-set until you do. 1-4 chance you get the one you want.... For now this is how ill work until I find a mifi... I also have a T-Mobile rocket, but its real slow, but ip changes very often. In case of pinch I have dial-up. Net zero offers 10hrs a month free. This could be a quick fix. Its good enough to print labels if needed and list with auctiva. I also figured out you can print labels on auctiva without linking to ebay or paypal and will update them in both. But you must add funds to account before buying them.

Yeah thats exactly what i've been doing, just reseting until it goes to the correct ip per account. It's just a hassle when sometimes it never goes to the one you need it to

Purchased t-mobile jet 2.0 on a special. Very, very poor signal near my town. Can barely connect. Ill try to jailbreak iphone 4 and tether..

Anybody try that truconnect thru wallymart yet?

biggunn 07-20-2012 06:49 PM

Lately I have been getting no new IP's at all using t-mobile tethering with pdanet for android. Luckily it's not my only method for IP's.
