This is not a 5 star thread, and it has been answered around 10 times a day. Search and you will find every answer you are looking for.

I am not trying to be rude at all but this has been answered endlessly. If you are unable to find it or can not take the time to find the answer on here where there are endless threads, then that is a you issue. Everything has been literally handed to you for you to read.

I'd like to know as well, but the information I read is either so cryptic to the extent I'm not sure what to do or so contradictory to every other response.
Those us a bone, you seem like a knowledgeable fellow.

Why do you guys go out of your way to tell him to search and not spend less effort answering?
When you apply for the EIN, you need to not mess around with the IRS. Your address that you apply for the EIN needs to be one where you can receive mail, but does NOT need to match the address on paypal.
What you'll need to do is either upgrade the paypal account to business, apply for the EIN under the business name you select for paypal... or get a DBA form and apply for the EIN in the DBA... for example:
Your name is John Smith
Paypal name is Jerry Johnson
You make a DBA (at your local courthouse) to do business at Jerry Johnson. Apply for the EIN as Jerry Johnson (now you're legal) Provide info to paypal, and you're good to go.

Just to follow up, that took me 20 seconds. How much more time did you guys spend not helping the OP? No offense, but you were new at some point, I was new... and I'm sure the Mods can pull up threads where you and I both asked silly questions in the past that had already been answered. I hate it when people tell others to search!!! Just answer the questions!

I guess I'm slow or something, but when you apply online for an EIN it asks for your name and SS#. If you input the DBA as your name and your own SS, will it not come up on as not matching not be issued buy the IRS?

no no no...
When you apply for the EIN, it asks whether or not it's for an LLC, S-Corp, sole proprietor, whatever...
Just type in the name of the business as a sole proprietor - name of the business is your DBA.

Good post on the EIN subject.

All you can do is change the attitude. Heck, I may even be guilty of telling people to search in the past. We have to be the change we want.

Just type in the name of the business as a sole proprietor - name of the business is your DBA. | This is the part that's confusing to me.
When I go to IRS.Gov, to apply for the EIN, I flag that I'm applying as a sole proprietor. It then asks for a first name, last name, and "SSN/ITIN".
It sounds like you're suggesting we enter the name of the business as the sole proprietor, ie:
First Name: Joeys
Last Name: Boat Service
But, what about SSN? Are you suggesting we enter our SSN? It's a required field.

The page at IRS.gov that I'm filling out reads:
Please tell us about the Sole Proprietor.
* Required fields
Must match IRS records or this application cannot be processed.
First Name:
Last Name:
SSN:
It appears to me, that we cannot enter "Joey's Boatservice" for the name, as it won't match any IRS records. So, are we to enter our real name and SSN, and then proceed?

You should put all of your real info, never lie to the IRS. On another note, I am sure you know that these questions aren't answered here

Wow Turtlecove, you are so far off from what you are supposed to do that I don't even know where to begin. You are not only doing everything wrong for incorporating for stealth, you are toeing the line of committing a federal offense. You need to seek professional advice.

Such info is posted all over the forum.
I recommend you go to the IRS site. Make use of their toll free service.
Get the heads up for the correct way to proceed. Then look at paying for the work to be done by a professional.
Remit of the forum is not to do tax advice.
