Default Bank Accounts....feeling a tad worried

Ive never had a problem with opening accounts as always done them online. I attempted to open one today over the phone and wish i hadnt.
Asked for a basic account and he asked what did i want it for. Having been put on the spot, i said for savings and for wages to go in if i get a job. He started waffling.about a savings.account until i need a.full bank account so i agreed. He then.said the only.one he.could offer was a saver isa account. I know to stay away from them and said no. He said he couldnt understand why i would refuse it. So he had no.alternative but to sign.me up for a bank account. He then waffled on about money laundering longer than necessary and then.said that a decision would be made by an underwriter in 48 hours. I guess ive made myself look dodgy havent i, by refusibg the saver ISA account.
My question is whether these banks know which other banks i have. I just.dont want to.draw.attention to myself and be questioned about why i have so many. That said, i only have 5 bank accounts.and one savings account....and three of those bank accounts are prwtty old so in fairness, im not overloaded with them.
Just feeling a.little worried and annoyed with myself for phoning to open one :-(

This is interesting - banks have strict rules about giving advice on services. They are not allowed to advise you on products, they can only tell you the services they have available and the choice is down to you. The are there to give facts on the services, you as the customer have to make the decision.

ANY bank giving advice on accounts or telling you which one is best for you is NOT allowed in the UK. If you wanted a basic account that is your choice, the bank aren't allowed to stop you applying for one, it's when they don't accept you is the point when they say they cannot approve.

Thank you Callidus. I just felt he was suspicious of me when i wouldnt take his ISA savings account. Now im worried about this underwriter. Im not worried in terms of what ive told him as all info real but the fact he has assigned.an underwriter to decide on a basic account is beyond comprehension. No overdraft..no chequebook. Just the basic one with no features.
Do you know whether banks know what other banks you have. Its.just this.bank is calling me back on monday with a.decision and hope they are not going to question why i want.an account with them when i have others.
