Have you ever failed the EB Security Question?

When calling into eBay and talking to a live rep have you ever failed a security question? If so, what was the question and what happened as an outcome?

Thanks for your input!

Maybe if we get a lot of responses we can kinda narrow somethings down

I've searched the threads yes, still haven't pieced together the answers I'm looking for.

Because putting the answers out there means the game will change.

What may have been standard, will be stopped.

Simple answer: failing a security question often will lead to ID request...

Calling EB isn't something you would necessarily want to do OP.

What is it all about? Raising selling limits?

failing security questions = kissing account goodbye

Yeah I understand that failing the security question will be a sweet kisses of the account goodbye. I'm wondering for those whom it has happened to what was the exact question that you were unable to answer? If people are able to give some stories maybe you will be able to prepare more or less for the questions they might ask. Yes, I do want to call (but I'm not YET) because I would like to raise my already high limits and two if I ever need to appeal a case of any kind like DSR or something I'd like to be prepared for that as well.

OK, please understand that you can't prepare for these questions, if your using a random name with a random addresss......there will be NO questions available for Ebay to ask...does this make sense?

 Again, you can't prepare! Ebay can't pull up any questions because the information you provide does not exist.

Is calling that important to you? in most cases, most accounts get limit raises pretty quick....are you trying to sell 1,000 items a month?

Best thing to do is open more accounts and spread sales across multiple accounts.

Re: Have you ever failed the EB Security Question?

I already have a 1000/25k limit amount but I need more. I've had an ebay account in the past and I called a number of times to get my limits raised. Worked without a problem everytime. The security questions were basic.. Zip Code, User Name, City Street Etc. I do have the real phone and number # attached to the account so that'd be an automatic verification match. My account does not have a birthday attached. Do I add that on... will it raise a flag? I've heard people talk about public records questions.. "where did you go to college etc" What kind of car do you own? How the hell can ebay possibility ask those questions... that's something you get asked when applying for a mortgage loan, bank account etc.. not to get your limits raised or get a neg feedback removed.

They ask it by using a background checking system (similar to the same system credit card companies use when running a background check on you). This info is "public" somewhat and so eBay gets a bunch of that and then it spits out a few questions for the rep to ask based on all that info. You would be surprised at how personal some of those questions can get.

Re: Have you ever failed the EB Security Question?

They don't always ask public records questions when you call. If you're calling with a general question or to get negative feedback removed, then you should have the account information in front of you because they will likely ask for the username, address, phone etc. And then they'll move onto helping you with your problem.

But with limit increases (especially on a new account), they will almost always ask those questions. They need to verify your identity because they want to know that they can trust you. This is completely separate from any phone verification or anything that is done during account creation. It's rare enough for a new account to even have those high limits; it's even more rare for a new user to actually need more than that. Keep in mind that most new eBayers are just selling a handful of random things around their house casually. Even if they didn't try the public database questions, they would likely want to see invoices and other documents to see that your items are legit and coming from a legit source since someone who sells that much is obviously a reseller and not just a random casual seller.

In some situations, they would simply increase the account's selling limits, but that would not happen on an account that has limits as high as yours.

And if they do the standard procedure of trying to pull up those questions then you're putting the life of the account in that rep's hands. You're basically kissing it goodbye as SilentHill said.

There's a reason why calling is generally not suggested unless you absolutely must do so - in your situation so many things can and likely will go wrong so it's not worth losing a valuable account and hard work over a small chance that they raise the account's limits (and keep in mind you'd basically have go take the same risk every month if you want to keep increasing it). Everyone is telling you not to call not to be mean, but rather it's due to past experience and knowing exactly how those calls will go.

The safe option is to just sell to your limits and wait for natural limit increases so you don't have to call anyone, or to have multiple accounts.

Also you should be prepared on the Paypal side of things as well. I don't know if it's the quantity, the dollar amount, or both that you need more of, but it sounds like you're going to hit the tax ID request pretty quickly. You'll need to get an EIN and register a company if you plan on only using 1 account with a high volume of sales.

Re: Have you ever failed the EB Security Question?

Thanks! Yeah already looking into an EIN as i'll probably need it within a month or so. I was hoping those public record question were just for New low limit accounts that were possibly not verified yet.

Operate with this in mind, ebay asks whatever questions ebay deems needed to control what happens to an ebay account.
