I use my smartphone as the modem, connect to pc via usb, Giff Gaff £10 top up give you unlimited internet / 300 minutes / unlimited texts, its only about 1 meg broadband but fast enough for eBay / surfing etc. Strictly speaking tethering your pc/laptop to your mobile to get mobile internet is not allowed but as long as you dont go mad with your downloading they cant tell that you are doing it!

To get a SIM with £5 free credit when you top up £5 go to:

www.gg-sim.co.uk/johnnyleedsuk

Its the best mobile deal I ever had! Basically it works out as 4p per minute plus free to call other Giff Gaff phones and 0800 numbers, also there is NO MINIMUM CALL CHARGE!

How cool is that?!

What app do u use and is it jailbroken?

Most Android phones running ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) or Jellybean have wifi hotspot, bluetooth and usb tethering already built in to the OS as does IOS for iphone if your carrier allows it otherwise it needs to be jailbroken and there are numerous apps available through Cydia to allow hotspot or tethering.

just tried mywi works a treat but slowish

It's not the app that slow, more likely to be your connection.

Try Tether Me, much better

Any dongle is only as fast as the network it connects to

Only to a certain degree. Some USB dongles work better than others, especially the newer ones.

NoneOther 02-21-2013 03:28 AM

Slapped is correct

While a dongle may be capable of connecting at high speed e.g 21 mbps if the network speed is a max of 7 mbps then that is what it's max connection speed will be.

Location and cell tower signal strength can also have an effect on the efficiency of mobile broadband connection speeds

SimpleX 02-21-2013 06:24 AM

Thats why I said only to a certain degree, as if you have a dongle only capable of 3Mbps and the network supports up to 7Mbps, having a better dongle is gonna pay dividends. Many of the cheap and easily available dongles today are quite slow.

Better to choose the best network in your area, and then choosing a dongle that can support it, which many of the newer ones can.

If you really want the best, look for a network that supports dc-hsdpa+ and then find dongle that has dc-hsdpa+ too.

If you want a better signal you should use a male to female wire connected to your dongle around 3 meters it acts like aerial and you can hang it near the ceiling or for best results near a window

The signal is usually better if you are upstairs

Only 3 currently support dc-hsdpa+ and that only covers about 50% of the UK population.

If your going to go that route you are best to wait for 4G which with 3 will cost exactly the same as their current data plans. All the other networks are going to hike their prices as per EE

SimpleX 02-21-2013 11:13 AM

But if you want a solution for now, and Three covers your area for dc-hsdpa+, then thats an option available to you.
