i have virgin media modem and a dlink dir615 router. I usually change my ip up to 3 times a day before getting a 169 ip address problem. all i do is alter the mac address by 1 digit on my network card or by 1 digit on the cloned mac address on the router. I have 2 linksys 2 line telephone adapters plugged into the router with 4 phones connected to 6 sipgate accounts as well.
i turn off the modem. edit the mac address on the network card or change the last digit of the cloned mac on the router Use numbers 0 to 9 or letters A to F. dont forget to record the old mac address and the old ip address on a spreadsheet. i turn off the computer and re boot the modem. once the modem has settled about a minute i reboot the router and or then the pc. a new ip address appears. i boot up in a different windows id then firefox to IPBurger and there’s a new ip. i record this new ip and also the new mac address. if i change more than 3 times i usually get a 169 ip address from windows meaning it didnt get an ip from virgin. if i need to go back to the previous windows id and ip address i look up the previous mac address edit it from the current and re boot etc usually getting the previous IP address. Where I live a dongle is very slow or at worst no connection.
