virgin media

Goto start button type in cmd, then click ipconfig, it will bring up your IP address, then type in ipconfig/retreat, turn off your modem over night and you IP will change.
Dont forget to clear your cookies and most important your flash cookies

Ooooh...is it that easy as that? I will try soon and let you know...if this method works, how lucky I am using virgin media braodband :)

This is your first post and very helpful!!!
Thank you very much

sorry its...

sorry its not ipconfig/retreat.......

heres a full run down, now ive sobered up.

Connect directly to the cable modem, you must not connect through a router -- you can connect through a switch, but it's not recommended (reason behind this is that Virgin customers can have more than one CPE assigned to their modem, and if you have multiple computers or whatever connected to the switch -- it won't work.)

So you've connected directly to the modem -- i don't care how, just make sure there is no router involved.

Command Prompt ... Run 'ipconfig /release' and remove the power supply from your cable modem -- leave it unplugged for about 2 minutes.

This is the tricky bit and where you have to act fast. Whilst you're plugging the power supply back into the cable modem, you need to run 'ipconfig /release' (the opposite to /renew) ... KEEP doing it and KEEP doing it -- even if it says that the IP address is something like 192.168.100.1 -- NO, this is not your router assigning IP's, you haven't connected through it remember? ... this is just the IP local to the cable modem itself.

just be patient for a few whilst it connects.

Should have a new IP :)

Hope this helps

Have you tried this before sometimes?

suspendedagain 12-11-2008 07:18 AM

yes

Yes i do it every time i need to change my I.P
Works a treat

GreenBean 12-11-2008 07:24 AM

Suggest you keep a log of which IPs you use. Saves lots of problems if you have more than one ebay account.;)

can i just say this does not work. i have been trying for months but it keeps giving me my old IP again & again....

the only way to get a new IP is if you disconnect from Virgin Media all together - and re-connect

suspendedagain 12-12-2008 04:19 PM

It should work, make sure your direct into your modem (not wirelss) re-set your wireless router.
If that fails switch from your Ethenet cable to USB cable that should change it too...I am currently onto a friend who works for Virgin...Ill keep you updated

Do you have any wireless conections (unsecured) that your that computer can pick up...i.e next door neighbour?

dolores 12-12-2008 05:17 PM

i do have a wireless router but im not using it at the moment

yes i do have an unsecured wireless connection - i am saving that for emergencies :)

but i wanted to change my IP address as i thought it was an easy thing to do with Virgin Media - but its proving to be difficult

Hi

I have Virginmedia broadband and I find that I get a new IP number every 7 days, i dont know if there is any way you can get this changed quicker, I have tried the IP config tool in the command line interface but this doesnt seem to work when you ask it to release and renew the IP address...?

carillion72 12-15-2008 11:11 PM

ip change

i just go to run type cmd then type in ipconfig/release then enter,ipconfig/replace then enter,it worked for me,or you can go to youtube for loads of videos on the matter.cheers

As I mentioned in my last post in this thread I have tried the cmd / ipconfig / release / renew procedure and I find it does not work, nor does unplugging the modem and reconnecting to the internet, even when I have unplugged the modem all night I still get the same IP address that I have been given that lasts for 7 days and then I get a new IP address that lasts for another 7 days. Its a bit awkward having to wait 7 days to get a new IP address but I suppose its better than been stuck with the same one permanentely.

dolores 12-20-2008 07:15 AM

Well that's better than me i have been stuck with the same IP since i re-connected to VM since July. Although i have about 3 unsecured wireless networks i can use....

mantisinc 12-23-2008 08:35 AM

I'm with VM, and I just need to unplug and replugin my router, and it will change the IP. Easy as pie.
