Urgent help required (tethering abroad)
 

I've just checked into my hotel for the week and am not getting a lick tethering from my O2 iPhone to my MacBook in Greece.

Any ideas??

Urgent to withdraw funds and send labels back to the UK for my friend to print and dispatch for me.

So you are in Greece and trying to tether your UK phone on 02 in Greece? Is there roaming charges? If so you have enough data on your contract?

Yeah. But now still got the same problem.

It worked yesterday for approx 10 minutes and now keeps saying "safari can't establish a secure connection to the server"

Also keeps saying "cannot open ipburger because he server unexpectedly dropped the connection. This sometimes occurs when the server is busy"

Fairly sure that's an issue between you and your network provider. Are you out of service range?

Logging the IP isn't really the issue here

Your logging into you PayPal account from a non UK IP address. That would be the potential issue and PayPal may lock the account down asking for a few bits of verification before they unlock it

Tethering overseas is always very hit and miss. You tend to be limited to a pretty slow data stream which is generally OK for mobile browsing but not fast enough for tethering which is why you get the time out issues.

Many providers won't allow you to tether whilst abroad.

My phone is on 3 mobile. I can use it abroad for free and can use it to tether inside the UK but I am not allowed to use it to tether whilst abroad.

To check the location of your IP (I would assume its UK if your still in the EU), go to https://db-ip.com/ and paste your IP into the search box at the top.

Whilst other IP sites give you a fairly accurate IP location, I have come across none that are as accurate as db-ip.

I always get a UK IP address within the EU when using mobile broadband. It's usually very reliable in built-up areas too. Greece, especially rural Greece, I'd have my doubts about.

You get a UK IP address when you tether overseas? I have never heard of that before.

Without fail. Other users have reported the same info.

Incredibly handy - although, as has also been reported, tethering may be disallowed by the network. Dongles work well.

https://db-ip.com/ gives my IP location as:

Country United Kingdom
State / Region Scotland
District / County Glasgow City
City Glasgow

I would talk to your network provider

I imagine there is a block on you tethering overseas. You may be able to get that removed, but you may need to pay for it
