So is this phone box verification still the only way at the moment? What website do you think is the best for finding uk phone boxes? Do you just use an address on the same street as the box?

Just use a phonebox on your street, and that should work. I don't think it has to match your exact house?

Default new alert from ebay

I have been using UK money phone boxes for verification.
I have over 15 accounts all working with this system

You will need a friend or as i do a USB dongle to go mobile
and possibly a laptop as i do

Sign up if you have to if you desperately want to keep trading!
There are some good deals around for 12 month contracts for
£10-15 a month (a small price to pay)

It is a little awkward but it works as follows :

1. Find a call box and note the phone number on it.

2. Have your laptop with you at the call box and
enter the call box number into the sign up part
of the ebay verification system.

3. The call box will ring and give you the 4 digit ver'
number.

4. Now for the clever part. The automated voice asks
you if you are execting the call and randomly asks you
to press an number between 1-9. NOW, if you press
the call box number, say six then you will discover to
your horror that all UK phone boxes are not touch tone
so nothing will happen !

5. The solution is to hold up your mobile phone and put the
speaker directly to the call box ear headset and press the number
that ebay is asking for

6. You will notice on all mobiles that when you press any number
from 1-10 the pitch is slightly different for each number.

7. VOLA ! You will hear the verification number given to you and
away you go.

NOW, I know you will be saying, i dont have a dongle or a laptop
but with a friend in hand you can get them to activate the call
from your PC and use your mobiles to get the call box number to ring.

There are plenty of call boxes out there and they all have their
phone numbers on.

Any questions just reply. I have been using this method for six
months and it works !

Good luck
thats all very well, but and a big but, ebay have been sendiing out new alerts to everyones a/c, they say they are going to make random calls to the phone you have listed to verifly it is you they are calling, any ideals?

Bertie, that's not quite true.

The alerts were for the new flash cookie system, where if there is no cookie (such as you are on a different PC), then when you list an item, you can specify when you want to receive the call (which can be on your mobile).

HI:
In the USA-we used to have what was called a Criss Cross Directory-- it was everyone listed first by Name, then a section, by street, then by telephone number--it was pretty thick-- it was starting to be used by Telemarketeers--but was very good for real Estate-
Now i think its on a cd volume.
So- since the web /internet access etc-- I think what Mantis is saying is correct-that they
use their software to get you CLOSE to the zipcode--
I have been able to verify in my zipcode/town-but not even on the same street..
Good Luck

Mantis, you mean me In the UK they match your exact Building Number & Postcode to your tel number TRUST ME! i just did it from my work building and tel number, the building is a listed building with no number, paypal couldnt verify it so they are sending it through the mail.
SO what i think is the best for someone who is finding it hard to verify is to list a ⊗⊗⊗⊗ number or forward a number on voip paypal, make sure you have an address you can access!! I've used my next door neighbours as they will pop the mail that paypal send around to you

Just make sure you have a ⊗⊗⊗⊗ number but same area code ok so paypal try but cannot match it to the address and then wait for mail!

I was just wondering which models of mobile phones people are using to do this. I have tried three Nokia and Samsung phones but they don't appear to work - I don't think the tone is loud enough!!! The Samsung phone did work once but I have not been able to get it to work since for some reason.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i think this method should be taken down. 1. because of new database introduced in paypal where they match address to number. 2. There isn't a physical address for a Telephone Kiosk
3. So when they send the code via mail you wont get it, trust me i work with the damn things

Cool

Hi all,

I'm going through the steps of trying to get back on ebay (UK), and the main stumbling block seems to be the phone number issue. This thread gave me a ray of hope, but as it goes on it seems that using the phone box doesn't work either now!

If I can't use a phone box, getting another landline no. installed is not possible at the moment, and if using someone elses no. may not match the address I gave... I'm pretty stumped as to what to do about getting either Ebay sellers or PP verified.

Any ideas?

Sorry if its a dumb question, or if I've misread anything, it's getting late here!

Thanks,

Equilibrium

In another thread I've seen this: Virtual Phone Numbers, Call forwarding, www.jetnumbers.com does anybody know if this still works for verification, and do the ones such as Grand Central only work for ebay US?

BT in the UK will install a seperate line with a new number to any adress for about £120.00 . plus a small monthly line charge. you can use any name to apply and have that name listed. they dont check. if your making good cash on ebay it must be worth it . ( jus an idea ). has anyone managed to verify in the last few days using a phone box ?? is it still working. also if your having problems with tone volume on your mobile . i managed to turn the volume very high on my samsung. should ork for most mobiles if you go into settings and alter it .

What happens if the address is that of a suspended account? How will the new phone number work?

It doesnt matter if you get a second line you'll be wasting £120 lol plus £11 rental because your still at the same address which is linked to your phone number, doesnt anyone read???

Paypal have a database which is like the bt phonebook, address's match phone numbers!

You can get away with it if you have access to an address so they can send the verification code via mail, but verification by phone will not work if the address doesnt match. They will send out a physical slip. (If you have access to the property) YES your onto a winner. Stooom!

After trawling the interweb this afternoon, I have managed to get another geographical landline number, for £36.00 per year (£3 per month) that has just verified with both eBay and PayPal no problems.

Cheers,

Equilibrium
