Phone number verification solution - THIS WORKS !

OK, guys, i know the voip issue and it doesnt work
with verification for ebay or paypal.

I have been using UK money phone boxes for verification.
I have over 15 accounts all working with this system

You will need a friend or as i do a USB dongle to go mobile
and possibly a laptop as i do

Sign up if you have to if you desperately want to keep trading!
There are some good deals around for 12 month contracts for
£10-15 a month (a small price to pay)

It is a little awkward but it works as follows :

1. Find a call box and note the phone number on it.

2. Have your laptop with you at the call box and
enter the call box number into the sign up part
of the ebay verification system.

3. The call box will ring and give you the 4 digit ver'
number.

4. Now for the clever part. The automated voice asks
you if you are execting the call and randomly asks you
to press an number between 1-9. NOW, if you press
the call box number, say six then you will discover to
your horror that all UK phone boxes are not touch tone
so nothing will happen !

5. The solution is to hold up your mobile phone and put the
speaker directly to the call box ear headset and press the number
that ebay is asking for

6. You will notice on all mobiles that when you press any number
from 1-10 the pitch is slightly different for each number.

7. VOLA ! You will hear the verification number given to you and
away you go.

NOW, I know you will be saying, i dont have a dongle or a laptop
but with a friend in hand you can get them to activate the call
from your PC and use your mobiles to get the call box number to ring.

There are plenty of call boxes out there and they all have their
phone numbers on.

Any questions just reply. I have been using this method for six
months and it works !

Good luck

Excellent Post. Its the same method I have been using for about 3 weeks now, however I think you should take this post down as Ebay will find a way of stopping it once they know. I have only been telling people by PM how to do this to trusted users of the site, maybe you should too?

mattcafc 05-22-2008 09:15 AM

Also if you have an Iphone or simular, you can do the signup online on the phone, and do the verification with that, not needing to take a big laptop with you

aspkin 05-22-2008 09:41 AM

Interesting post RichieL, thanks for sharing.

Ballsack 05-22-2008 10:09 AM

You know guys the funny part about all this lets say ok you set up an account using call box verified bam everything fine 4 months later Suspended you say dam did someone else used that call box # lol maybe worse 3 sellers used the same box you guys must have some type of communication when doing this call box thing maybe post a sticker on the phone ebay paypal already taken dont not use keep it moving bright Yellow or something like disable the phone...Good luck using this call box thing cross your fingers.

RichieL 05-23-2008 05:26 AM

You won't get suspended for someone else trying to use the call box
as ebay holds database of phone numbers already used, so if you
try the same box it wont work ! I think we live in a bigger geographical
area than our American counterpart is aware of ! We dont all live in the
same city !!

Disable the phone !! very odd.

THIS WORKS UK EBAYERS ! GOOD LUCK AS STATED ABOVE

You used your Noggen...Great Post! :)

yogarelax 05-23-2008 08:28 AM

Is a "call box" a pay phone??? And is this for the UK & the USA?? Here in the USA, we have many "pay phones" that will not take incomming calls. If someone calls you from one of these, the # shows on the caller ID BUT if you try to call it, the recording says you cannot.

medway30 06-05-2008 01:01 PM

is this still the only solution to phone verification? not that the info is not appreciated;)
just is bit hard for me to do as i usually use an ip from a different town and getting there would be sometimes difficult.

mantisinc 06-06-2008 10:02 AM

So, it's the pitch that verifies you are expecting the call?

Do keytones have to be on, on your phone?

mattcafc 06-08-2008 08:38 AM

Yes its the pitch. Each number on your keypad has a different sound, and by pressing the correct one its just confirming with Ebay you are expecting the call and are the person making the account.

Yes you would need the keytones on your phone to be on for it to work

Have someone do it with you then. One person at the phone box the other at the computer.

And dont use an IP from a different town as its not needed anyway

mantisinc 06-08-2008 10:53 AM

What kind of distance are we talking, that would be accepted between the home address and the phone box?

powerbid 06-08-2008 07:33 PM

lot has been changed since my return.. mantisinc have u got any updates regarding phone verification ?

GreenBean 06-08-2008 07:47 PM

powerbid, fyi NO.
'Cept a couple of dozen or so people running from phone box to phone box. Still a serious
problem.

deankenny 06-09-2008 12:34 PM

wow excellent stuff, but what avout linking up to paypal does that mean u have loads of paypal accounts too, phone number is not a problem, its the linking with paypal, i dont wanna link with my original paypal coz then my main account will get suspended how u uk guys getting around this

mantisinc 06-09-2008 01:05 PM

No powerbid, Richie has come up with the latest method in this thread, which has proven to work.

It certainly works. There are a few UK websites that list all the public
call boxes in your area (UK residents) You may have to travel a few
miles but it's well worth it.

Thanks Mantisinc for your earlier research that you have taken for
your UK method. Excellent stuff !

ambercolour 06-12-2008 04:10 AM

God this brings back to the days of Phreaking, with the 2600Mhz tone and the blue box! I feel like a teenager again!

trust & safety retards 06-13-2008 07:21 PM

I thought that Paypal were able to check whether or not a landline number was linked to your address?

greg2414 06-18-2008 08:01 PM

Paypal match numbers with address's now apprently :/

medway30 06-19-2008 02:10 PM

So is this phone box verification still the only way at the moment? What website do you think is the best for finding uk phone boxes? Do you just use an address on the same street as the box?

mantisinc 06-19-2008 03:03 PM

Just use a phonebox on your street, and that should work. I don't think it has to match your exact house?

bertie 06-19-2008 04:01 PM

new alert from ebay

thats all very well, but and a big but, ebay have been sendiing out new alerts to everyones a/c, they say they are going to make random calls to the phone you have listed to verifly it is you they are calling, any ideals?

mattcafc 06-20-2008 10:47 AM

once you have verified change the number to your cell

mantisinc 06-20-2008 11:13 AM

Bertie, that's not quite true.

The alerts were for the new flash cookie system, where if there is no cookie (such as you are on a different PC), then when you list an item, you can specify when you want to receive the call (which can be on your mobile).

greg2414 06-20-2008 11:56 AM

Matt. it has to match your house :))
They have a new databse pretty much like the bt phone book!
Even ex directory stuff :)

I wouldn't mention that in front of Matt...

ebayhateluv 06-20-2008 08:25 PM

HI:
In the USA-we used to have what was called a Criss Cross Directory-- it was everyone listed first by Name, then a section, by street, then by telephone number--it was pretty thick-- it was starting to be used by Telemarketeers--but was very good for real Estate-
Now i think its on a cd volume.
So- since the web /internet access etc-- I think what Mantis is saying is correct-that they
use their software to get you CLOSE to the zipcode--
I have been able to verify in my zipcode/town-but not even on the same street.. :)
Good Luck :)

greg2414 06-20-2008 08:54 PM

Mantis, you mean me ;) In the UK they match your exact Building Number & Postcode to your tel number TRUST ME! i just did it from my work building and tel number, the building is a listed building with no number, paypal couldnt verify it so they are sending it through the mail.
SO what i think is the best for someone who is finding it hard to verify is to list a ⊗⊗⊗⊗ number or forward a number on voip paypal, make sure you have an address you can access!! I've used my next door neighbours as they will pop the mail that paypal send around to you :)

Just make sure you have a ⊗⊗⊗⊗ number but same area code ok so paypal try but cannot match it to the address and then wait for mail!

medway30 06-22-2008 01:11 PM

RickieL What website do you use that lists all the public phone boxes? Ive tried googling but can find anything:(

tardiscentral 06-23-2008 06:01 PM

I was just wondering which models of mobile phones people are using to do this. I have tried three Nokia and Samsung phones but they don't appear to work - I don't think the tone is loud enough!!! The Samsung phone did work once but I have not been able to get it to work since for some reason.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

greg2414 06-23-2008 08:58 PM

i think this method should be taken down. 1. because of new database introduced in paypal where they match address to number. 2. There isn't a physical address for a Telephone Kiosk
3. So when they send the code via mail you wont get it, trust me i work with the damn things ;)

Camp out at the phone box?

Equilibrium 07-10-2008 04:27 PM

Hi all,

I'm going through the steps of trying to get back on ebay (UK), and the main stumbling block seems to be the phone number issue. This thread gave me a ray of hope, but as it goes on it seems that using the phone box doesn't work either now!

If I can't use a phone box, getting another landline no. installed is not possible at the moment, and if using someone elses no. may not match the address I gave... I'm pretty stumped as to what to do about getting either Ebay sellers or PP verified.

Any ideas?

Sorry if its a dumb question, or if I've misread anything, it's getting late here!

Thanks,

Equilibrium

Equilibrium 07-10-2008 05:21 PM

In another thread I've seen this: Virtual Phone Numbers, Call forwarding, www.jetnumbers.com does anybody know if this still works for verification, and do the ones such as Grand Central only work for ebay US?

Equilibrium

badebay 07-11-2008 02:12 AM

BT in the UK will install a seperate line with a new number to any adress for about £120.00 . plus a small monthly line charge. you can use any name to apply and have that name listed. they dont check. if your making good cash on ebay it must be worth it . ( jus an idea ). has anyone managed to verify in the last few days using a phone box ?? is it still working. also if your having problems with tone volume on your mobile . i managed to turn the volume very high on my samsung. should ork for most mobiles if you go into settings and alter it .
