I stick with AOL dial up cause I get the different IP address everytime. Too bad the other way doesn't still change your IP cause dial-up is soo slow. But I go with what is safest for me.

Modee said: "Seems like it sometimes did not work in the first place. People were checking their IP address with What Is My IP Address? - Lookup IP, Hide IP, Change IP, Trace IP and more... and the like, and thinking they were okay, when sometimes their ISP's WAN IP address was flowing through to EBAY and getting them busted." So, is there any way for us to get a correct check on our IP, other than asking you what is coming through at your end? Thanks, Modee |

Okay, posting this message via AOL Browser with sign in for an AOL account. It is possible to use the AOL browser without signing in. If you do this you WILL show the same IP address as you IE |

Now posting via IE. Interesting when I switched from AOL to IE the cookie stayed and I was already signed in. It is always advisable to clear cookies when going from one account to the other even if switching browsers |

IP on post #29 is 205.188.XXX.XX On #30 71.158.XXX.XXX So it would seem that proxy is WORKING for you. Can you let us know more about what exactly you are doing in each case? I mean the browser you are using has nothing much to do with it.

Obviously I do nothing different when using IE. As for AOL I have an email account and have downloaded the AOL browser. If I access the web using the Aol browser it does nothing to change the IP address. In order for it to work you have to actually sign in to AOL and I do so by checking my email by using the AOL icon on the top of the browser. This will then log you in using your AOL ID and password. You will then be accessing the web via the AOL proxy. I ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS verify my IP address through one of the site listed here in the forums to make sure that I am accessing everything through the AOL proxy and not my regular IP. Thank you for the advice. But I don't see a AOL icon on the top of my browser. Please advise how I obtain that icon. BTW: I use an Apple Mac. So what works for a PC may not work for a Mac. Thanks. | |

I did as is advised. Signed into my AOL account. I had cleared cookies, etc before doing so. Yes, for sure I find I have a different IP address. BUT, HERE'S THE CATCH!! That IP address is MERELY a WEAK CLOAK of my real IP address. Simply doing an IP reverse lookup I identified the location of that IP address as EXACTLY the same as my internet provider!! Doing this repeatedly. i.e. logging out. deleting cookies, etc. logging in. repeating the procedure. EVERY TIME there was the same problem. Every time the new IP address was transparent as far as reverse look-up software was concerned and it identified my isp. Thus eBay will easily be able find your real IP address by using some sophisticated reverse software. Whether they go to that length all the time is not known. But maybe they do when there is excess computing power available, like at quiet times. Last edited by SheerGold; 10-15-2008 at 12:25 PM. |

Dial Up AOL is the only form of AOL "proxy" I recommend. People are getting busted right and left using AOL bring your own access proxy, and maybe this is why.

My latest research shows that the reason AOL will not work for EBAY, Google Checkout, and others, even if the WhatIsMyIPAddress.com type sites show you at a completely different IP address, is that sites can blow right through that proxy AOL IP to your real originating IP address. I can't post details of this in public, very sensitive information, but I am now understanding how and why proxies, VPN, TOR, etc. do not work. Also consider the post above about "reverse lookup" that may be another factor. More here: PROXY servers (proxies) and VPN , TOR - Hiding your IP
